Promotoras Launch First Coop in South County Multi-Service ECOS Is Born with Seven Immigrant Women Excellent Community Organizing and Services LLC (ECOS) was incorporated on April 2 and will open its doors for business following this public launch on Wednesday, June 26 at the offices of Human Agenda, with the support of a grant from the Office of Santa Clara County Supervisor Sylvia Arenas. The press conference will take place at noon at 1590 Oakland Road, Suite B211, San Jose, CA 95131. This unique worker-owned cooperative of immigrant women will offer community education, translation and interpretation in three languages (Spanish, Triqui, and English), home and office cleaning, and event-based childcare services. Most of the women are survivors of gender-based violence or human trafficking and have worked extensively as promotoras with Community Solutions in Gilroy and Morgan Hill, providing community education regarding domestic violence, human trafficking, and health issues. The seven worker-owners, incorporators and members of other cooperatives in Santa Clara County will be available for interviews at this novel and exclusive launch event The Workers Control the Business and Receive the Profit In this age of rapidly growing inequality and corporate decisions over which employees have no control, the democratic community wealth building model of ECOS LLC offers a refreshing alternative built upon internal democracy, equitable compensation, and an atmosphere of cooperation and caring. Each worker is a co-owner. Each worker member has a vote in all decision-making, even with their salary. Each member contributes to success by participating in one or more committees. Imagine being 16 and being excepted to be an adult. For some this is the harsh reality, and because a young person carries around the title of 'young person' they are also the victim of stereotypes. Thanks to Olivia Galvin-Hughes and Caroline Hudson for bringing this event to my attention, and more importantly those that contributed to the report released Megan Downey, it was a real eye opener and left me questioning as an employer what more can we do. I too have fallen into the stereotype of labelling young people, and I am an advocate for young people. Thanks to this report I now have a better understanding of the barriers in place for young people that is disguised as support, and ill judged measures used to force engagement further. Why is there a young persons wage? wages should reflect the role not be based on their age. Employers should not use a young persons age as cheap labour. Why do you young people receive lower benefits compared to adults? if a young person is in receipt of benefits surely they have the same commitments like rent, utilities etc... Some young people are forced to find independence from an early age, whether it is in or outside the family home, and to restrict their wage just based on age when every individual is different is unfair and heads back to that word stereotype. This is why as an employer Keltbray are committed to paying a minimum of the living wage on all of our projects. They are among the most disadvantaged groups in the EU: they have high unemployment rates, are among the lowest-paid workers and are consistently deskilled and pushed to casual jobs in unregulated sectors. Impact of National Rally's Victory on Black and Brown People in France If Marine Le Pen's far-right National Rally (RN) party wins the snap elections in France, the future for black and brown people in the country could be significantly impacted by the party's policies and ideological stance. Here are some key points to consider: Anti-Immigration Policies Marine Le Pen and the RN have consistently advocated for stringent anti-immigration measures. These include: - Expelling more migrants and stopping family reunification. - Restricting childcare benefits to French citizens and giving French nationals preference in access to social housing and jobs. - Withdrawing residency for migrants who are out of work for more than a year. Nationalist and Protectionist Measures Le Pen's policies emphasize prioritizing French nationals in various aspects of public life: - The principle of *priorité nationale* prioritizes French nationals in jobs, social housing, welfare benefits, and healthcare. - The RN's stance on law and order includes prioritizing French nationals for public services, which could marginalize black and brown communities.
