The Art, science and commerce of pharma selling! Three decades ago, when I become a pharmacist, being an medical representative (MR) was a natural choice. The reasons were plenty. 1. MR was a person with whom doctors would discuss serious science. 2. MR was the most well dressed, well groomed, well articulate person across pharma continuum. 3. Patients believed discussion between Doctor-MR has profound impact on their quality of life. Indeed, for me as an pharmacist, each encounter with MRs was special since they carried themselves with such a grace and had an different aura. This pushed me to become an MR. I still remember, to get that coveted job of MR, I had to face huge competition. I had to outperform 50 other equally deserving candidates. That needed your A game always at play. To get that job, I had to demonstrate significant understanding of art, science and commerce of pharma selling. Firstly, this required in-depth understanding of science. Then commendable ability to communicate and third, salesavyness and business acumen. Naturally, when I became MR, I was happy, proud and excited. I enjoyed every interaction with doctors. It was such a learning. In the era of postcards, telegrams and trunk calls, it was mutual knowledge sharing. In early days of my career, doctors were my teachers and books were my companion. Like in the famous Hollywood movie- Forest Gump, where Tom Hanks kept walking, I kept reading. That helped me gather adequate scientific knowledge. The lack of resources was blessing in disguise. Through each discussion, I learned how communicate, how to probe, how to present appropriate information and how to solve queries. By observing seasoned MRs, I learned how to close calls, how to convince doctors and how to generate prescriptions. It was scientific selling in its pristine form with patient outcome at its core and disease management as its soul. Circa 2024, we now struggle to get adequate pool of graduates who really are aware of glory of being MR. MR continues to be an profession which still requires mastery of art, science and commerce of pharma selling. It’s a profession, if practiced with utmost earnestness can still impact positive patient outcomes and can improve quality of life. This is possible even in the era of Chat-GPT. Only thing needed is – belief! What do you say? Image source - Google #pharmasales #medicalrepresentative #pharmaceuticalmarketing #marketing #sales #nostalgia

Once considered a noble profession, pharmaceutical selling has been so downgraded that today, few want to join it. One reason is the abundance of opportunities in today's business world. Another is the shortcuts adopted by pharma companies, which have turned Medical Representatives into mere messengers and Product Managers into travel agents or distributors. Pharma managers have become liaison agents between companies and doctors. The silver lining is the government's intervention through UCPMP (Uniform Code for Pharmaceuticals Marketing Practices). However, much will depend on how effectively it is implemented... What do you think??? Usually, I start meetings with colleagues from pharma industry with a simple question: Have you ever worked as a medical rep? Although the first idea of a medical rep could be the bottom movie and this glamorous life Jake Gyllenhaal portraits, the reality is anything but. Medical reps are the striking force of the pharma industry. Their day consists from endless kilometers, traffic jams, busy hospital hallways and lots of personal contact. Whoever works with people knows that the latter is also the most challenging. Reps' job includes transfer of knowledge, but also lots of adjustments to each individual, creativity, hospitality, and all of that easily burns one's energy. Take my word for it - I have spent more than 5 years in their shoes, visiting numerous doctors' offices. Therefore, I have the greatest respect for each colleague on this position. And that's exactly why I have always had the idea of development of a tool that can make their job little easier. Finally, we have a solution – implementation of Nobula Case Creator (NCC) in medical rep's day-to-day work. No additional work, but on the contrary – saving their time and energy. Have I caught your attention a little, can I tell you more about this new NCC perspective?

Medical Science Liaison | Medical Affairs | Medico Marketing | KOL management | Strategic communication | Digital health | Ex- Entrepreneur
The difference between a #medical representative and an MSL/RMA. I've been asked this repeatedly. Let's get into it. - As an MSL your role is non promotional whereas the role of a medical rep is promotional. This is the biggest difference. That means you don't talk about cost or demand a prescription from the KOL. - Med rep's role is to create brand awareness, drive sales. Your responsibility as an MSL is to share scientific data and gather insights from the HCP. - A medical rep's target audience ranges from Doctors, pharmacists to hospital staff. As an MSL your interactions will be limited to senior KOLs or your therapy area. - For a healthcare organisation, the RMA/MSL team is utmost important since it's their responsibility to build trust with the KOL and align the HCP's medical beliefs with those of the organisation. Medical focuses on the long term vision. Med reps who belong to the sales vertical are the ones who focus on the present. They bring the money that feeds the organisation. Let's look at the simarities- Both need to have excellent communication skills. Both need to strengthen relationships with KOLs Both work in accordance with the organisation's larger agenda. What did I miss? Did this post help? #medicalaffairs #sales #doctors

In Medical Affairs, it is expected to be a requirement for jobs to "Build and nurture relationships with KOLs." But what does that mean? It means they have to learn how to communicate not only the science of our products but also, in reality, all the human intricacy behind the banal act of prescription, what we know as the clinical reality. A relationship with KOLs is based on the mutually beneficial understanding of the truth, the goodness, and the beauty behind what we have to offer, so you can create the trust to talk about a relationship. "In most cases of people actually talking to one another, human communication cannot be reduced to information. The message not only involves, it is, a relationship between speaker and hearer. The medium in which the message is embedded is immensely complex, infinitely more than a code: it is a language, a function of a society, a culture, in which the language, the speaker, and the hearer are all embedded. Sound is dynamic. Speech is dynamic — it is action. To act is to take power, to have power, to be powerful. Mutual communication between speakers and listeners is a powerful act. The power of each speaker is amplified, augmented, by the entrainment of the listeners. The strength of a community is amplified, augmented by its mutual entrainment in speech. […] This is why utterance is magic. Words do have power. Names have power. Words are events, they do things, change things. They transform both speaker and hearer; they feed energy back and forth and amplify it. They feed understanding or emotion back and forth and amplify it." Ursula K. Le Guin. Creating these relationships means harnessing your KOLs' power to transform patients' clinical reality.

Strong “soft skills” are more important than ever in medical affairs. You can only offer real VALUE after you ENGAGE a #KOL, identify their NEEDS, gain #INSIGHTS and PERSUADE them to consider your idea or opportunity.
