Last week marked the return of the Sifted Summit, and it's hard to believe it's already been a year since the last one! Last year's Sifted Summit kick-started some incredible friendships with fellow founders who share the same passion for innovation and entrepreneurship. This time around, it was nice to see that my network has grown even more! It was lovely to see familiar faces; those of founders and investors who've become a part of my journey since our first meeting. But you know what's even more exciting? It's the opportunity to make new connections and start new friendships. Some of the people I met this year could be the start of amazing collaborations and partnerships for my company, Clear. The summit isn't just a great opportunity to meet people - there are also numerous fascinating talks, meet-ups, roundtables, and exhibits - all within the context of the current startup and venture ecosystem in Europe. My top three takeaways from the event were: 1️⃣ Fundraising now is unpredictable. Companies investors expected to secure funding haven't, while unexpected ones have. 2️⃣ Early-stage startups have been less affected than growth-stage ones. Navigating these uncertain times requires resilience and agility, especially for companies in the growth phase. 3️⃣ The era of "startup tourists" is fading. With these unpredictable times, only robust and genuinely innovative businesses are likely to succeed. It's a positive shift towards a more sustainable and impactful startup ecosystem. In a world where virtual interactions have become the norm, being able to meet face-to-face with incredible individuals who are shaping the future of tech was a priceless experience. The Sifted Summit is a testament to the importance of conferences in fostering connections, sparking creativity, and driving innovation. I left the Sifted Summit with a heart full of gratitude for the friendships I've built, the knowledge I've gained, and the endless possibilities that lie ahead. Today I visited the GREENTECH FESTIVAL in Berlin with my dear friend Andreas. 💚 To make it short: Good vibes, busy floors and a big startup space. But tbh I wondered if it's really worth it for startups. I remember from my active time as an exhibitor that we weren't honest about the hard costs per lead. We argued a lot: being there is everything, you have to be seen, brand building is important, it's where the industry meets, serendipity happens, if we just get one big order it will pay off... not to forget the parties! That's all true, but the opportunity cost of attending a trade show is very high, especially for startups. And while this isn't meant to be a trade show bashing at all, here are a few suggestions from my experience, on how to make the most of it... - Train your team to proactively approach people. - Initiate a challenge to see who can get the most leads. - Prepare in advance and market your attendance by actively inviting customers. - Consider a small side event, such as a VIP dinner. - Try to book a package with a speaking engagement at the conference, that has always paid off for us. - Use the exhibitor directory for your own prospecting. - Calculate cost vs. lead conversion after the show with real data and decide whether to repeat. - Push your presence on social in real time.
