In the Spotlight: Biofuels So, why do biofuels represent such a great opportunity to immediately decarbonize Canada’s on-road transportation sector? Among member nations of the International Energy Agency, Canada was found to perform about 25 per cent lower than the median in ratio of liquid biofuel energy to total oil energy use. Likewise, Canada’s biofuel energy use as a percentage of total energy use is significantly lower than other member nations. With so many feedstock options available to Canada’s transportation sector for ethanol and renewable diesel, there exists a significant environmental and economic opportunity to scale up production of low carbon intensity fuels that can immediately reduce fuel source and tailpipe emissions in Canadian vehicles. Orim Energy is proud to announce the strategic partnership with VARO Energy, which will enable us to make a significant contribution to the decarbonisation process in the shipping industry by scaling up the supply of B30 Biofuels to our customers in ARA. Current demand for Fuel Oil in ARA, Europe’s largest bunkering hub, is approximately 14 million tonnes per year. Supported by new EU regulations, the market for B30, a blend of 70% Fuel Oil and 30% biofuels, is expected to grow rapidly to the end of the decade. As a result of this joint initiative, Orim and VARO will be well positioned to meet this increased demand and support the decarbonisation plans of their shipping customers.
