BACK IN THE DAYS I remember when I was a Nursing student, the way our training was could be likened to a glorified secondary school, at least that was what we thought then. This was so because our expectations of higher institution experience was dashed. The stories we heard from siblings, school mothers, senior friends were not anything close to what we were experiencing here. Our tutors ensured the standard was kept, punishment served as when due, nurses in the hospital were not left out when we missed our clinicals or arrived after they took over the wards. In fact the fear of Hospital based examinations will keep you on your toes during clinical experiences. Oh do I want to talk about some policies and healthcare workers attitudes we found strange? It was really a journey and these things spored up many questions I had about my beloved Nursing profession, of which I am still in search of answers for some. Hmmmm, time they say reveals things and surely I know better that I did not attend a glorified secondary school, I signed in for professional training, and that is what I got. I went there to be trained to be a Nurse and that everything there was tailored so that I can be a great Nurse. As I started practicing as a Nurse, I discovered that nobody hated me, nobody meant evil for me, nobody plotted my failure. If I ever felt or saw that happened, it was all an after math of two things; ✅ Either I stepped out of the expectations of me as a Nursing student in training ✅ Or my tutors and Clinical Nurses were just being human (exerting negative energy they felt at the moment towards me). Those trainings though painful and stressful made me a great Nurse today of which I am grateful for but who thought about my pains and frustrations and how I managed to live above them or am I really living above them? Dear Future Nurses can you relate🤷 Just know that you are not alone, whatever school is putting on you, you too will come out strong. Do you want to know how I pulled through my pain in Nursing school? Then let me know that in the comments section I am Udy Nkanta your Nurse Mentor, I help to build Impactful Nurses for the future and help them plot a successful Nursing career pathway. #nursesweek2024 THANK YOU to all of the nurses who work so selflessly and with so much heart at the bedside. Because it’s hard. And unfair. Period. When I was in my last semester of my nursing diploma program, I wish my clinical instructors would’ve told me that there is FAR more opportunity in nursing than at the bedside. More so, I wish they had told me and my classmates: 👉🏼 You are NOT less of a nurse for choosing to step away from the bedside. 👉🏼 You will not “lose” your skills away from the bedside. 👉🏼 It is not normal for your nervous system to feel like it’s on fire at all times. 👉🏼 Do not let senior nurses tell you where to take your career. We are all called to different areas. 👉🏼 You deserve to LOVE your job. For anyone who recently graduated from nursing school, just know that if starting at the bedside sounds like hell to you, you’ve got options. What are you good at? What do you love doing? Where do you thrive? What do you want your life to look like?
