The Transformer Project has come to a successful close! 🎉 We ended on a high note with two fantastic site visits to thyssenkrupp and Wilo Group facilities. Now it's time to deep dive into thyssenkrupp! 🚀 Thyssenkrupp's steel plant in #Duisburg is the largest in Europe, with a capacity of 11.5 million tons of steel per year. Currently, the plant produces 9 million tons due to market conditions. 🏭 Steel production is a significant contributor to CO2 emissions, producing 1.4 tons of CO2 per ton of steel. This accounts for 5% of EU emissions and 7% globally, mainly due to the use of coke in the process. 🌱 Thyssenkrupp is pioneering a shift to a climate-neutral process. They are preparing to build a new technological system where the current blast furnace will be replaced by a Direct Reduction (DR) plant and melting unit, using hydrogen instead of coke. This new system is planned to start its operation in 2026, with a total investment of 9 billion euros required for three units over time. 🔥 Our group had the privilege of observing the first stage of steel production: the blast furnace, where hot metal is produced from metallic ore, coke, and flux. This metal is then transported by special trains for secondary metallurgy. Niche Fusina Rolled Products Srl is one of the world’s leading producers of flat rolled aluminum products. The plant is located in the industrial area of Venice, and was originally built to support the Italian aluminum industry, in the 60’s. The plant is composed of a cast house and rolling mill, to manufacture finished products such as "sheets”, “plates” and “shates”, with a production capacity of 75,000 metric tons. The plant specializes in serving the commercial transportation, marine and general engineering sectors. Under its new ownership, the plant is undergoing a series of new investments aimed at improving quality, reliability as well as reducing its overall environmental impact. Aiming at further improving the plant’s reliability, Niche Fusina Rolled Products Srl assigned to Danieli Automation DIGI&MET an order for modernizing the Hot Rolling Mill Automation System, replacing Mill Main Pulpit, PLC control system and Mill Setup system. Danieli Automation DIGI&MET experience in matching new state of the art technology with legacy equipment was a key factor in pursuing this project, fostering reliable technical solution and short shutdown time.
