Last week, several members of our London team volunteered at a Relaxed Performance of Sister Act, supporting one of our London-based charities Go Live Theatre Projects. Relaxed Performances are designed to provide an opportunity for young people with autism, learning disabilities or other sensory and communication needs to attend the theatre while benefiting from a more relaxed environment where the normal rules don't apply. Our team, pictured here (from left to right) Tammi Lotter, Claire Carr, Jackie Mills and Farrell J. were there to assist the Go Live team in offering a supportive, understanding and welcoming atmosphere for all by greeting the families, assisting them with any questions and helping them find their seats and settle in. It is incredibly important that independently-conducted and objective research is informing policy and practice change. The approach taken by the OVA should set the standard for all Government Departments.
📢 We have funded 3 independent reports by Robert Gordon University, Combat Stress: The UK's Leading Charity for Veterans' Mental Health & The Veterans and Families Institute at Anglia Ruskin University to investigate how the government & charities can improve access to care for female veterans. 👇 Sarah Atherton MP discusses how our upcoming Women Veterans’ Strategy will implement their findings.

Human Trafficking is a Global Health Crisis that we all need to be aware of. We Run Oakland: For Children was formed because of the high incidence of trafficking in the city of Oakland and Alameda County. However, this issue is not unique to Oakland - the perils of trafficking impact many communities in CA and the United States. No matter what country, state, county, or city you live in, we should all share the humanitarian goal of protecting one another, especially the most vulnerable. To that end, we welcome you to have an Oakland mentality in this anti-trafficking movement. Build community power through awareness, conversation, advocacy, and action. There is even a virtual option to participate, so we have all our bases covered. We would love to see We Run Oakland in your city...We Run Oakland in (insert your city) _____, you fill in the blank! A Sista’s Touch (AST) & DopeOnly (DO) will be hosting our 7th Annual charity 5k run/walk, “We Run Oakland: For Our Children”, to raise human trafficking awareness. The event will be held on Saturday August 24, 2024, from 8am-12pm at Oakland Technical High School. While there are many causes to stand for, WE run and walk for the protection of our children against the greatest human rights violation of modern day time. The most effective way to protect our daughters/sons/grandchildren/nieces/nephews and our community, is to first recognize that human trafficking is a global public health crisis that requires community engagement to make an impact; AND to learn ways you can protect your family and others from the negative consequences to our community. This event is more than just a 5k, it is a family community event, designed to bridge community with resources to help prevent or to intervene where there is on risk of trafficking or exploitation. There are many ways to get involved: YOU can REGISTER to participate, YOU can INVITE others, YOU can DONATE, YOU can VOLUNTEER, and YOU can SHARE the information with family, friends, and professional organizations - We are always looking for Corporate Sponsors. The fight to stop human trafficking begins with YOU! Register now at: https://lnkd.in/gsE_parA Contact us at: [email protected]

A helpful reminder of some prime language issues- please feel free to call me out if I ever slip up on one of them!
A child is not ‘a placement’ and nor is my home. I don’t work with ‘cases’- I work with families. We don’t send children ‘on respite’ we have planned sleepovers. We train many different Local Authorities, agencies and charities who still call children ‘placements’. We have been working hard at changing the use of depersonalising language for 10 years. Much easier (on us) to say, “Such a shame. He has had 22 placements!” No, he has had 22 families, 22 different sets of rules, 22 bedrooms, 22 beds, 22 people he will probably never see again. I looked after 17 children. I didn’t look after 17 placements. Let’s not save our delicate sensibilities, let’s start calling it how it is and giving children the dignity they deserve.
