THREE powerful insights from my interview with Tom Box of Blue Zoo Animation Studio that I just have to share. 💡 1. Bucking the trend can bring about real change. A prime example of putting this ethos into practice is the initiative co-founder Oli Hyatt MBE took to lobby the UK government to support the animation industry at a critical juncture by raising awareness of the cultural importance of retaining local productions and its net benefits to the country's economy. This resulted in the introduction of tax reliefs for all UK animation studios, generating more jobs, opportunities for growth and established the independent organisation Animation UK. "Not accepting the status quo is a quality to be celebrated" - Tom Box. 🤗 2. Being a creator-led studio means doing the best for your staff. Anyone can say they care, but Blue Zoo hold themselves accountable to an independent certification from B Lab UK, which measures standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability in companies. Certifying to be a "B Corp" is no cakewalk. It's a comprehensive and rigorous process, and upholding that certification involves regular audits from a third-party on where you are as a company, where you want to get to and acting on areas for improvement. "Every three years we do that certification and B Corp increase the threshold each time, so you can't be complacent or rest on your laurels" - Tom Box. Stepping up to meet such metrics shows a commitment to walking the walk of authentic impact. ✨ 3. Trust is everything. "In a business sense, the only reason a client will use us, any company really, is down to trust. They trust you will do what you said you'll do. That is critical" - Tom Box wisely notes. It's a simple truth - our clients choose us. So delivering on promises is the bedrock of our existence in the business landscape. This principle easily applies to the employee employer relationship and even team dynamics. Tom's candor on the centrality of enduring trust in their strategic vision is a timeless reminder for shaping our own journey forward. With LightTwist you can record and stream in a virtual studio in realtime. But, if you have network hiccups there might be times where things get low res or glitchy. To solve this we shipped a feature that uses locally recorded video and audio to re-render the whole recording after the fact! Here's how we do this - during live recording/streaming we record your video and audio locally in your browser AND we also record everything that happens in the virtual studio on the server to a custom file. This means if you do things like change camera angles, play an animation, share a video - it all gets captured and used during re-render so everything you did during recording/streaming gets replayed in sync with your higher quality video and audio! 🎬 Behind the Scenes: Helldivers 2 Gameplay Edit 🎮 Hi everyone, 🎮 I’m excited to give you a behind-the-scenes look at a recent project where I edited a gameplay video of Helldivers 2. Below is a screenshot of the timeline in Adobe Premiere Pro, showcasing the detailed work involved in audio mixing, video editing, and sound effects. 🕹 For this exercise, I aimed to enhance the gaming experience by replacing the original soundtrack with epic compositions by Hans Zimmer. This involved: 🎶 Video Editing: Carefully selecting and timing cuts to match the music’s rhythm and enhance the storytelling. 🎶 Sound Mixing: Balancing in-game sound effects with Hans Zimmer’s scores to create a dynamic and immersive audio experience. 🎶 Musicalization: Integrating powerful music tracks to elevate the intensity and emotion of the gameplay scenes. 🎶 Sound Effects: Adding immersive effects like temporary deafness when near an explosion to increase realism and player immersion. This project was an excellent opportunity to refine my skills in these areas, and I’m thrilled with the outcome. Meet the Voxels: I joined Nickelodeon in 2014 with a thesis that the future would be rendered real-time. Specifically I wanted to bring game engine technology to kids animation development and production, because I strongly believed that the next generation of original IP should allow audiences an active or passive choice on how to consume it. During my time as a Senior Executive within the studio, I was fortunate to be hands-on and able to concurrently fill creative, technical and leadership roles.  This allowed me to produce dozens of demos and a few large presentation pilots that leveraged these concepts. My capstone project, that I’m the most proud of, was an idea I had to do a performance capture sitcom.  I wanted to make a show that was a cross between Wreck-It Ralph and Married With Children but for the Fortnite generation -- a family of video game character’s done in the familiar 22 minute comedy format. Meet the Voxels was a linear show, built in Unreal Engine with a companion battle royal game which used all the same production assets from the series.  I designed the production to follow a typical sitcom schedule: table read on Monday, rehearse on Tuesday/Wednesday, do a Network run through on Thursday and then “capture” in a volume on Friday.  We would follow that with an edit and post animation cleanup and keyframe work. At the time this was a fairly big idea and required a lot of R&D from a small internal team that I assembled as part of a Lab based in the Burbank animation studio.  From the ground up I built a small virtual production stage capable of full body motion capture, a virtual camera system that could handle multicam switching/recording in Unreal and a post workflow that followed a traditional editorial pipeline that conformed the motion data for cleanup based on an EDL.  The pilot was built on Perforce, pushing the envelope on remote collaboration for a typical television animation delivery.  I used the in-house capabilities to test the workflow, audition actors and educate the writers and director that were hired to work on the pilot.  For the physical production, I partnered with Animatrik and WildBrain to produce the animation at scale using NantStudios Culver City stage. I learned a lot from this experience, not the least of which is that working real-time IS the future and virtual production techniques using game engine technology will continue to pave the way for every aspect of content creation, distribution and consumption. #unrealengine #mocap #motioncapture #animation #vr #virtualproduction
