Higher education leaders have a golden opportunity in this current crisis—if they are brave enough to acknowledge what is broken and commit to repairing it. Integrity Accountability Civil discourse Critical thinking Intellectual honesty Nuance This should be “college 101.” As Elisha Wiesel, son of Nobel Peace Prize laureate and Holocaust survivor Eli Wiesel, wrote in an op-ed published today, “It’s time for university leaders to do their job. It’s time for them to teach.” Teach students how to think, not what to think. Teach them to navigate even the most complex and emotionally laden topics with humility, curiosity, and dialogue, rather than as an exercise in intellectual combat. If we can’t do this work within the sandbox of our academic institutions, where can we do it? #leadership #education #higherlearning

That was the message presented by Pasi Sahlberg at last night's Dean's Lecture at the University of Melbourne. He covered a lot of ground during his one hour presentation. One of his slides included the famous quote: "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.’ (Often attributed to Einstein but was actually penned by Rita Mae Brown.) Some could become dejected by the figures he quoted. I wasn't. I was inspired. We CAN change how we do education. But it requires determination and COURAGE. I thoroughly believe that real change can only originate at the school level in the current environment. Do you have that courage and determination? #courage #determination #schoolimprovement #leadership #schools If you would like to discuss what you can do about inequity and falling student outcomes, there are many things you can do. If this is your passion, I'd love to have a chat with you. You can contact me by direct message here, via any of the details in my profile or, if you prefer, you can book a time for a zoom call directly in my calendar here: https://lnkd.in/gzEjyJVr

I help Asian American women become confident, authentic leaders who inspire others & transform the world through culturally-informed coaching | Leadership & Team Coach | Formerly in Corporate Social Responsibility
It is heartbreaking to see what is happening in many universities across the United States. We live in a world where gaps are not only wider; they also hurt more. We cannot turn a blind eye to what is happening in the campuses that supply the future of the American workforce. It is strange that many of these universities are offering courses on principled negotiation, but fail to walk their talk. However, University of Chicago’s Paul Alivisatos’s message is a light in the dark: https://lnkd.in/gt6hcu5u Leadership in today’s world calls for more dialogue instead of force. I wish we can all be braver to hold difficult conversations among ourselves. It offers a path to growth and healing. #dialogue #negotiation

Are university staff & faculty prepared to weather the sea-change that's happening in higher education in 2024? In a Forbes forecast of the major challenges facing universities today, Michael Nietzel identifies five trends with major implications for staff and faculty: --Changes to admissions policies (DEI is one of many) --More (and intense) oversight from outside entities --The effects of AI on curriculum and processes --Changes to curriculum in response to lower admissions (3 year college, anyone?) --Continuing budget challenges related to lower enrollment, inflation, etc. All this has me wondering if colleges are keeping up with the leadership development needed for those on campus who are responsible for ensuring that the sea-change doesn't swamp the boat. Love to hear thoughts from those in the mix!

"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." - Nelson Mandela As leaders and changemakers, we must reflect on the essential role of education in shaping our future. The question isn't just what we teach, but the underlying intent and purpose behind our educational endeavors. Historically, from the ancient centers of learning in Asia, such as Taxila (5th Century BCE) and Nalanda University, to the medieval institutions of Europe like the University of Bologna (1088) and the University of Paris, (c.1150), education has served both to expand the mind and to enforce power structures. In today's global landscape, how do we ensure that education is a tool for unity and understanding rather than division and conflict? How do we balance nurturing a deeper consciousness with preparing strategic minds equipped to handle the complexities of our world? This dual challenge requires an understanding of strategic principles akin to those found in Sun Tzu's *Art of War*, integrated with a commitment to fostering inclusive and forward-thinking environments. As conscious leaders, we must leverage historical insights and strategic acumen to navigate modern challenges. It’s about being prepared for potential conflicts and guiding our teams with wisdom, ensuring that education in our organizations serves as a tool for both empowerment and protection. Let's embrace our roles not just as leaders but as custodians of knowledge and power, using education to build bridges and fortify our collective future. #ConsciousLeadership #StrategicThinking #LeadershipDevelopment #SunTzu

Saturday edition of Word of Advice: ABD (All But Dissertation) is not a designation. It is a status that indicates you completed all coursework and any necessary examinations in a doctorate program. It also signifies the transition from student to candidate status. However, the letters ABD do not belong behind your name. It's equivalent to saying you are John/Jane Doe, High School Senior. While I encourage everyone to celebrate the milestones and victories, let's make sure as academics we're acting accordingly. I have seen this error several times and thought I would help someone out. Be well! #scholarship #leadership #leadershipexpert #leadershipeffectiveness #doctoraljourney #education

9th International Action learning Conference - 7-9th April 2025 is to be held in Manchester. The theme for the 2025 International Action Learning Conference is Creating the conditions for developing people and organisations with a focus on two areas in particular: Collective capability – action learning has a tradition of people interacting and working together to achieve ‘something’. Collective capability describes those ‘somethings’ as being delivered through a process of collective agency. Papers are welcomed on action learning and how it supports that focus of collective capability/agency/leadership. Action learning as an agent in leadership development – action learning is used throughout many industries as an agent for development of leaders. Please share papers on how action learning supports or is the key component of leadership development within programmes or as one-off activities. Proposals for papers, workshops or other suggested contributions are invited for submission: Refereed papers – abstracts of 300 words Accounts of practice or workshops – outline of 150 words Please email submission to: [email protected] by 25 October 2024. Please use this email address for any queries about the conference.
