Outdoor Hoarding/AD as it should be ... The first industry that I worked in was Out-of-home Advertising and for obvious reasons I have that sense of emotional, practical connection with it always and even more as a sucker for good advertising. Over the years one thing was very clear to me, that, what would I call a good Outdoor Ad/Hoarding/Billboard for a brand or a campaign. One that would have great visibility (short & long distance), be in a high traffic location (moving or still) and at an almost clutter free location. AND If all of the above is accompanied with a big Logo, big Product visual and minimalistic text/script it is a true "sone pe suhaga" or "jackpot" moment in Outdoor Advertising. No wonder when I saw one such recently during my travel, it just struck that chord. Well done #jeep and their agency. New Fake Out-of-Home (#FOOH) advertising! FOOH ads are a new model of outdoor advertising where real images are mixed with elements created by advanced technologies such as computer-generated images (CGI). Some of these ads achieve such a realistic finish that they end up going viral by making us wonder if what we are seeing is real or not. Established Zimbabwean supermarket chain Bon Marche launched a new billboard campaign a few months ago, and I have to say it’s a move in the right direction for the brand. What the creative agency got right with this advert is that they kept it clean and simple! The key to great outdoor communication is avoiding clutter and distraction for an audience that is usually on the move (unless they are stuck in a traffic jam!) Designing across a very wide landscape canvas like this wide-format billboard can be quite tricky, but the creative team did very well here. This particular ad is for Bon Marche’s liquor store, as shown by the big and bold logo on the top left, which is counter-balanced by a simple call-to-action, “Celebrate Good Times”, super-imposed on their iconic green apple shape on the extreme right. The entire billboard is dominated by a full-bleed aspirational lifestyle image of two people enjoying drinks, and it brings life to the billboard while communicating that Bon Marche is your ideal destination for liquor products. (My apologies for the poor image resolution - this is a busy Harare intersection, which made it tricky for me to get a decent photo of the billboard!) Overall, it was an excellent job by Bon Marche and their creative agency, Barkers Ogilvy.
