Deflection Tools: Downhole Motors with Bent Subs A downhole motor with a bent sub was a common method for deflecting wells until replaced by steerable motors. The bent sub is run directly above the motor and its pin is offset at an angle of 1-3 degrees. The bent sub has a scribe line cut on its outside body (casing) above the pin offset. This scribe line is used to orient the BHA in the required direction. The orienting sub allows single-shot surveys to be taken to confirm the orientation of the BHA. Deflection of the wellbore occurs when drilling is carried out with no surface rotation to the drill string. The drill bit is forced to follow the curve of the bent sub. The degree of curvature depends largely on the bent sub-offset angle and the OD of the motor. When the required angles (inclination and/or azimuth) are obtained, this BHA is tripped out and replaced with a rotary assembly. Stay tuned for more about Directional Drilling (D. D). A turbine motor comprises several components: a multistage vane-type rotor and stator section, a bearing section, a drive shaft, and a bit rotating sub. Each "stage" section consists of a rotor and stator with identical profiles. In this design, the stators remain fixed and are locked within the turbine body, directing drilling mud to the rotors attached to the drive shaft. The IMSA deep hole drilling machine MFTB 3000/110EVO is dedicated to cylindrical workpieces that must be drilled on their rotation axis, more specifically, this machine has been developed for aeronautical materials, martensitic stainless steels in particular, such as X30CrMoN15-1 and 17-4Ph among others. Materials like these make deep drilling quite a difficult process requiring specialized solutions. This machine configuration also provides solutions for head and counter-head movements with double ball screws, efficient BTA-tool wear-resistance systems, oil pressure and flow rates controlled through inverters, and an oil cooling unit. Repeat Formation Tester (RFT) RFT is a wireline run tool used to measure the formation pressures and enables collection of fluid samples from permeable formations. RFT tool can obtain 3 pieces of pressure data: 1- The hydrostatic pressure of the drilling fluid. 2- Pore Pressure of the formation. 3- The Pressure transient induced by the withdrawal of 2 small samples ( Tool has two chambers).
