Today's Earth Day theme is Planet vs Plastic 🌍🚮 I reflect on my journey from practising as a clinician during the COVID-19 pandemic. The visualisation of all the PPE waste that we were producing made me realise how environmentally harmful healthcare can be. We are facing a circular challenge in healthcare, where our (often unnecessary) use of single-use plastic medical equipment, results in plastic pollution, which ultimately ends up in our bodies, lungs, blood vessels, and placenta, with the potential to impact on our health. This Earth Day, let's commit to reducing our reliance on single-use plastics across all sectors, including healthcare. By embracing innovation, investing in research, and advocating for responsible consumption, we can mitigate the environmental impact of plastics and safeguard the health of our planet and population for future generations. Here at Nuffield Health Haywards Heath, we are joining in 'The Big Plastic Count' for our staff and their families to raise awareness and highlight the effect of the environmental plastic waste produced. 🌍 This week is about counting your plastic waste. Did you know only 9% of plastic gets recycled globally which creates a huge plastic mountain of waste that is not biodegradable and is a huge threat to our environment, wildlife, waterways and general health. Just see how much plastic we use in one week! Are you taking part? This is the first leg of our plastic vs planet activities that we are organising in the lead up to Earth Day on April 22nd when we will be launching our second sustainability week. 🌎 Supporting the #PlasticFreeJuly Movement ♻️ Plastic Free July is a global movement that challenges us to reduce our single-use plastic use for a cleaner, healthier planet. 🌱 The production, use and disposal of plastic can harm the planet in various ways such as: -> Marine, terrestrial and air pollution. -> Harm to wildlife and ecosystem disruption. -> Increase of human health risks. -> Increase clean-up costs. -> Pollution and waste can deter tourism and damage local economies. Oceanic is committed to raising awareness on the impact of plastic and creating a more sustainable supply chain. We have been removing single use plastic from our supply chain and replacing packaging with more sustainable solutions. On 7th June ,2024 I participated in a webinar by #DrSammyKingBaiden under #uniathena which was about "plastic-free futures" Be part of the solution We all know that plastic pollution is a global crisis but our action makes a difference from reducing to supporting eco friendly products. Plastic business is prospering due to its cheaper compared to others used for packaging, lightweight as well as durable and versatile. This plastic pandemic leads to 8 millions tons to end up in oceans, harming ecosystems, Wildlife entanglement, human health impacts, destruction of habitats and dwindling tourism You and I can agree that we've never refused to buy whatever we're buying because it is packed in plastic which shows we lack some thoughts about serving our planet by using environmentally friendly products which can be by #3Rs(reduce, reuse and recycle) #effective waste disposal methods #clean up exercise participation This therefore, calls for a holistic and collaborative actions through individual choices changes by carrying reusables, deligent recycling and refusing single-use, community engagement such as beach clean-up and advocacy and policy changes through public awareness, legislative action and corporate responsibilities Let's be part of the solution in beating this plastic pullution #plasticfreefutures #reducereuserecycle #publicawareness #uniathena

Plastic pollution is a global crisis that threatens the health of our planet and its people. One Health is an approach that recognizes the interconnectedness of human health, animal health, and environmental health. Plastic pollution can impact all three of these areas, making it a One Health issue. One Health recognizes that we must work together to address the challenge of plastic pollution. This includes reducing our use of plastic, properly disposing of plastic waste, and developing innovative solutions to prevent plastic from entering our environment. Plastic pollution is has been a huge burden in our country especially in our major cities. In October 15th 2022, I took part in a plastic clean up walk organized by Students One Health Innovation Club (SOHIC). It is important for us as health care workers to be at the forefront in the fight against plastic pollution as we see the devastating impacts firsthand, from patients who have ingested microplastics to communities that are plagued by contaminated water and air. #plasticpollution #OneHealth #OneHealthApproach #OneWorldOneHealth #HealthForAll #HealthyPlanetHealthyPeople

In 2023, the month of July was once more a time where global initiatives to take action on plastic pollution surged. 🌍 Happy Earth Day! 🌿 This year's official theme is "Planet Vs Plastic", so we want to shine a light on the urgent need to reduce plastic waste and its impact on both our planet and our health. Plastic pollution is one of the greatest environmental challenges we're facing, threatening ecosystems, wildlife, and human health.   Did you know that plastic waste not only pollutes our oceans and landscapes but also finds its way into our food and water supply? Microplastics, tiny particles of plastic, have been found in everything from seafood to drinking water, raising concerns about their potential health effects on us, the people.   By reducing plastic waste, we're not only taking care of the environment but we're also taking care of our own health.
