The Russian mathematician Sergei Novikov (University of Maryland, Steklov Institute) passed away on June 6th. He was awarded the Fields Medal in 1970 for his proof of the topological invariance of the Pontrjagin classes of a differentiable manifold and his study of Thom spaces. Sergei Novikov regularly visited IHES in the 1980s and 1990s. At the time, he was working on topics related to mathematical physics.
RIP, the 3 volume "Modern Geometry" he coauthored with Dobrovin and Fomenko is one of the best books for learning differential geometry with a side view of physics.

1mo"Theory of Solitons, The Inverse Scattering Method" by Novikov et al. is one of the most fascinating math books I've ever read. Absolute genius
