Following the scientific breakfast organized in July 2023 with Thibault Damour, theoretical physicist and Professor Emeritus at IHES, the Institute returned to the British capital in June 2024. IHES gathered its London community on June 19th for a scientific breakfast with Yilin Wang Wang, junior professor of mathematics at IHES since 2022, introduced by Rama CONT. This event was organized with the support of the Department of Higher Education, Research, and Innovation of the French Embassy in the United Kingdom for the second year in a row. https://lnkd.in/eHj-G2nz

Dean, Faculty of Digital and Analytical Sciences, Universität Salzburg | DEAL High Level Expert Group Member, United Nations
What an honor to be elected into the European Academy of Sciences and the Arts! 😊 But more than that, it is an obligation, and a responsibility. Today’s (and tomorrow’s) grand challenges can only be tackled if scientists work together closely across disciplines and across nations. And if policymakers also heed sound scientific advice. https://euro-acad.eu/ #science #arts #academy #europe #sdg

The 22 April NITheCS Colloquium 'How close is Artificial General Intelligence and how will it affect fundamental science?' by Prof Bruce Bassett (University of Cape Town) is now available online. 'We explore the highly contentious issue of how close we are to genuine Artificial General Intelligence that is able to learn flexibly and generally like humans do. We then discuss what this means for research in fundamental science and end with speculations about the plausibility and consequences of Superintelligence.' https://buff.ly/4aY0dM6

The #NationalEducationPolicy (NEP) 2020 in India emphasizes the integration of the #IndianKnowledgeSystem into the modern education framework for the following reasons: 1. Cultural Relevance 2. Holistic Development 3. Local Solution to Global Problems 4. Preservation of Heritage
Chairman, University Grants Commission; Professor of Electrical Engineering, IIT Delhi; 12th VC of JNU (Jan 2016 - Feb 2022)
I write in an editorial of IETE Technical Review: Indian knowledge systems (IKS) encompass a wealth of knowledge, practices, and innovations amassed over ages in India, covering various disciplines, including mathematics, astronomy, medicine, philosophy, and ecology. These knowledge systems have often been neglected in the Indian education system, even though their potential contribution to advancing contemporary science is important. By applying scientific methodologies to study IKS and its associated practices, we can unlock their underlying principles, demonstrate their efficacy, and investigate their potential applications in addressing present-day challenges. It's essential to recognize that by integrating IKS into education, we can ensure that the richness and diversity of India's knowledge traditions are preserved and appreciated for generations to come. I’ve been running 3MT since 2018 for the University of Dundee. It’s a really tough competition. It sounds easy but feels and *is* really challenging. It’s not about fitting as much content as you can into 3 minutes. It’s actually about slowing down. It’s one of the best development opportunities for post-doctoral researchers to learn how to talk clearly and understandably about their PhD, their purpose and ‘why’ they are doing it. I love seeing how their confidence and approach develops and evolves. When I speak to them about the ‘why’ it’s often a challenge to get people to move beyond the reasoning given by their supervisor or the specific detail of their project but I ask why are they doing their PhD? Why did you decided to do one and why that topic or area? You can always tell when they are talking about the parts of their work that they feel most passionate about as their faces light up. That’s what the judges want to see. They want passionate presenters that present in a way they are comfortable with along with a talk that’s understandable and well structured. Easy, right? Good luck everyone! We are all cheering you on.
Come support PhD students at the University of Dundee who have taken on the challenge of condensing their research into only 3 minutes. Join us in-person or virtually at the Three Minute Thesis Dundee Finals this Wednesday at 12:30pm.

PostDoc @ETH Zurich researching environmental migration 🇧🇩, book author on transformative science »Draußen ist es anders«, speaker
🔔 Workshop announcement at ETH Zürich: 31.05.2024, 12:00 - 14:00 🔔 How can science help shape livable futures? Insights into transformative research and teaching What can science contribute to solving societal challenges and to the socio-ecological transformation of our social structures? How can students and teachers themselves become active for this change? And what might teaching look like that turns students into agents of change? In this workshop for all those who teach with curiosity and a will and possibility to create, we will provide insights into the basic ideas of a transformative and transdisciplinary science that critically reflects on such questions. In addition to some basic reflections on the social role of science, we will mainly present concrete approaches that are already testing the teaching of the future. In the workshop, there will be space to develop concrete ideas to incorporate transdisciplinary elements into your own course and to implement them in a transfer phase. We will build on the basics of "Learning to Teach" and address how to teach successfully using "real world problems". Further, we will reflect on the principles of teaching and learning as well as formative assessment possibilities such as CATs. The workshop will be co-organized by Dr. Marion Lehner (LET - Lehrentwicklung und -technologie ETH) and myself. Register here: https://lnkd.in/eQuZ6Gyv
