[VIDEO] On Friday, 17 May 2024, UCT's Nelson Mandela School of Public Governance, in collaboration with the Nelson Mandela Foundation, announced the development of the Nelson Mandela Memorial Centre. The construction of the centre will be made possible through funding by The Atlantic Philanthropies, as well as generous grants and pledges from various donors and alumni. The centre will provide a platform for students, researchers, and the public to engage with the teachings and archives of South Africa’s first democratic President Nelson Mandela, fostering a deeper understanding of his contributions and the values he championed. 🌟 Citizens' Assemblies in the News! 🌟 💸 As The New York Times reports this week, heiress Marlene Engelhorn is making waves by donating her fortune to charity—and letting the public decide how to spend it! 🤝 The 32-year-old Austrian turned to her fellow citizens to help redistribute €25 million of her inherited wealth. Through the "Guter Rat für Rückverteilung" (Good Council for Redistribution), a diverse group of 50 Austrians advised by experts chose 77 organizations to receive the funds, ranging from think tanks to climate and human rights groups. 💡 This innovative approach to redistribution is a prime example of how citizens' assemblies can be used to make important social and personal decisions.
