Marcia Angell, former editor the NEJM “launched a serious attack on the orientation & practice of modern psychiatry in a series of book reviews last year.. The technological paradigm underscores a trend towards the medicalisation of everyday life, which..is associated w/expanding markets for psychotropic agents. This has drawn widespread criticism, including from the chair of DSM-IV taskforce.. This process has also led to.. corruption of sections of academic psychiatry through its entanglement w/ pharmaceutical industry, damaging..credibility in the process.. Psychiatry now faces..challenges it cannot ignore. 1. a growing body of empirical evidence points to the primary importance of the non-technical aspects of mental healthcare. If we are genuine about promoting ‘evidenced-based’ practice, we will have to take this seriously. 2. real collaboration w/service user movement can only happen when psychiatry is ready to move beyond..primacy of the technical paradigm. …we argue that substantive progress in our field will not come from neuroscience & pharmaceuticals (important as these might be) but from a fundamental re-examination of what mental healthcare is all about & a rethinking of how genuine knowledge & expertise can be developed in the field of mental health”

Very interesting and important findings from scientists at The Max Planck Institue of Psychiatry in Munich, Germany, that there is a link between pupil response and loss of pleasure. This discovery contributes to a better understanding of the physiological mechanisms behind depression. Therefore, #pupillometry could be used as a supplementary method for #diagnosis of depression. It could contribute to the development of individualized treatment strategies for depression. For example, if a patient shows a significantly reduced pupil response, #antidepressants that act on the noradrenergic system could be more effective than other medications. The medication dosage could also be optimized based on the pupil reaction. The pupillary reaction is a marker for activity in the locus coeruleus, the #brain structure with the highest concentration of noradrenergic neurons in the #centralnervoussystem. Noradrenergic neurons react to the neurotransmitter #norepinephrine, an important component in the #stress response and the upregulation of arousal, in other words, the activation of the nervous system, and play a role in #depression and listlessness. #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth #psychiatry #biomarkers #depression
