After decades of organizing, protesting, arrest, and state-sanctioned bloodshed, the Civil Rights Movement secured for all Americans the Voting Rights Act of 1965, a federal law designed to make more real the Constitution’s promise that every single citizen has equal access to and an equal voice at the polls. 🗳️👏🏽 However, 58 years after becoming law, the VRA is now weakened. In recent years, the Supreme Court has chipped away at its efficacy leaving millions of Americans — in particular BIPOC, the LGBTQ community, and people living with disabilities — extremely vulnerable to voter suppression. Today, as we mark the anniversary of this pivotal legislation, we urge you to take action to protect voting rights by contacting your local representatives and demanding they pass the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, which strengthen our democracy and restore the VRA itself. We cannot afford to watch our constitutional right to vote be dismantled right in front of us. #VotingRights #VRA #ForThePeopleAct #JohnLewisVotingRightsAct #RestoreVRA #EndVoterSuppression

At the beginning of October, I submitted CEMVO Scotland's response to the Scottish Government's public consultation on Scotland's Human Rights Bill. Some key reflections: We need clear timescales outlined in the legislation, from the Bill being enacted to compliance of duty-bearers. This will help us hold the government account and make rights real sooner, rather than later. The Scottish Government need to be more transparent in their decision making. This consultation paper continuously states that certain things are untouchable due to the devolution settlement, particularly the equal opportunity reservation. While we accept that this is a complex area of law, we are disappointed that the consultation offers no transparency as to why certain areas cannot be explored more thoroughly within the confines of devolution. This is particularly concerning as the current proposal risks maintaining the status quo for those whose rights are most at risk, including those who experience racism, women, people with a disability, LGBTQ community and older persons. Public bodies and service providers who impact human rights should have a 'duty to comply' on the protection and realisation of our rights. We urge the Scottish Government to remain committed to the maximalist approach they promised, we can do more and we SHOULD do more. Finally, it is important to reflect that while we think more can be done, this is a huge step forward in the protection and realisation of human rights in Scotland. Incorporation of international human rights law into domestic legsilation is not easy, but it has the potential to truly transform Scotland. This has been a long time coming and a lot of hard work has been put in by the Scottish Government, civil society and human rights defenders across the country. This is a GOOD thing. Racism has become an inevitable part of everyday life. In the UK, inequality results in people of colour having shorter life spans, fewer job prospects, and a life of unfair oppression, with 75% of ethnic minorities experiencing racism in the workplace. The Collaboratory and Green Park created Race Equality Matters in response to the Black Lives Matter Movement to turn declarations of commitment and support from organisations and individuals into meaningful change in racial equality both in the workforce & in society. This then resulted in the annual Race Equality Week, to encourage businesses and organisations to learn about and take steps to tackle issues surrounding racism in their workplace. 90% of those who took part said Race Equality Week will have an impact on race inequality in their organisation. In today’s global economy, diversity is not just a buzzword; it’s a recipe for success. As we celebrate the unique perspectives and contributions of our LGBTQ colleagues, we should also recognize that equality is not just a moral imperative—it’s a competitive advantage. LGBTQ individuals bring a wealth of creativity, resilience, and diverse thought to our teams. Their life experiences foster empathy and innovation, enabling us to connect with a broader range of customers and clients. By creating an inclusive environment where everyone can be their authentic selves, we unlock the full potential of our workforce. Let’s continue strong and commit to fostering an atmosphere where LGBTQ equality is not just supported but championed. Because when we lift each other up, we all rise together. #DiversityAndInclusion #LGBTEquality #WorkplaceDiversity #InclusionMatters
A win is a win, and this one is HUGE! In this year’s Georgia state legislative session, extremist right-wing politicians failed to advance the more than 20 introduced anti-LGBTQ bills. This turning tide just goes to show that anti-LGBTQ agendas are old and tired. We are thankful for the students, parents and to partners like Georgia Equality and the Georgia Youth Justice Coalition for their leadership throughout the legislative session. The 2024 legislative session is just around the corner, and it's likely going to be more harmful and impactful to the LGBTQIA community than even 2023 was. Missouri was the first out of the gate with TWENTY ONE different hate bills pre-filed this week, and with the national election coming up, the rhetoric against trans people is likely to reach fever pitch. Please find ways to support your LGBTQIA colleagues in 2024. We aren't going to be ok when all these bills meant to cause us harm are in the news day after day for months. Check in on your friends regularly as these things happen, and don't rely on them to be the ones to tell you -- follow queer news sources yourself. 2024 is a critical year for the survival of the United States as a viable multi-cultural country, and we need those that aren't directly impacted by the hateful attacks and rhetoric to step up and do things to protect those that are. #TransRightsAreHumanRights #LGBTQIARightsAreHumanRights
