How to start an iGEM team? Almost 5000 teams have competed in the biggest annual synthetic biology competition, called the iGEM Competition, during the past 20 years. These teams have not just advanced the field of synthetic biology and made biology easy to engineer, but also created almost 5000 synbio projects and proofs-of-concepts have been tested at iGEM, leading to future research, PhD thesis projects, and the launch of new companies. ERC Advanced Grant for Jiří Friml The plant biologist and ISTA professor secured one of the EU’s most prestigious and competitive long-term fundings to embark on an innovative and ambitious project. In animal cells, the concept of second messengers—molecules that amplify processes such as stress or hormone response—is well established. Contrastingly, in plants, second messengers are not part of the mainstream idea. Recent findings in Friml's research group suggest that two specific second messengers called cAMP and cGMP act as versatile second messengers in plants. With CYNIPS (Cyclic nucleotides as second messengers in plants), Friml now seeks to find out more about these two molecules and hopes to establish them as bona fide second messengers in plants. The project aims to uncover new fundamental discoveries and holds relevance for plant biotechnology. 💬 “The ERC Advanced Grant is a great recognition of the past achievements and an enormous boost for our future efforts to unravel the mysteries of hormone signaling in plants.” - Jiří Friml #ISTAustria #ISTAresearch #ERC #ERCgrant #grant #biology #science #researc #EU #funding #plant #plants #biotechnology #technology #ERCAdG European Research Council (ERC) 📸 © Nadine Poncioni | ISTA

The Laboratory of Microalgae Biotechnology at ALGATECH Centre - Inst. Microbiol. Czech Acad. Sci. has published 2 scientific articles on the possible uses of #microalgae. Both received funding from the cross-border Interreg Austria-Czechia. The first article deals with the use of algae rich in #PUFAs in the rearing of pikeperch fry in fish hatcheries, and the second article addresses the possible use of wastewater for the production of Poly-β-hydroxybutyrate by #Synechocystis #cyanobacteria. Both articles are Open Access. 🫛 When peas (Pisum sativum) enter a symbiotic interaction with rhizobia bacteria, nodules develop to provide an ideal niche for the bacteria to fix atmospheric nitrogen for the plant. Like many other legumes, this method of acquiring nitrogen allows peas to thrive in a nitrogen-poor environment. However, it is not a free lunch... To participate in the symbiosis and enable nitrogen fixation, the pea plant must invest significant energy. ⚡ To avoid wasting, plants tightly control nodulation and constantly adjust the process based on their specific nitrogen requirements and carbon availability for their growth and development. 🌱💡 How does this happen on a molecular level? Join the Open Doors Fellowship, slot 09, and collaborate with Sofie Goormachtig’s lab (VIB) for your Short Research Stay. In this research, you will use markers and qRT-PCR to understand the process better. 🔬🧬🌐 📅 Apply before December 31, 2023. 🔗https://lnkd.in/e9XSgNS6 #womeninscience #OpenDoorsFellowshipProgram #ipbo #biotechnologyoutreach
