I'm delighted to share that the September issue of Cell Press Trends in Biochemical Sciences also includes two articles highlighting the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB) IUBMB Trainee Initiative! In the first, we get to meet current members of the Leadership Committee in an interview-style article, learning what motivates Mihaela Jovanović, Jessie Wong Ling Ai, Aishatu M., and Cathy Cozma, trainees themselves, to support trainees around the world. Read the TrendsTalk here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eqUPJsQG In the second article highlighting the IUBMB Trainee Initiative, Cathy Cozma and fellow trainee Patrick Penndorf describe the resources and events put on by the organization to support trainees around the world. Through these examples, they outline key objectives of the initiative to promote the growth and development of the next generation of biochemists and molecular biologists: 1. Develop professional skills 2. Share resources and knowledge 3. Increase inclusivity and accessibility 4. Promote sustainable science They end with a call to join this organization as they continue to put together resources for the community's young researchers. The Distance between Mr Sunil Mohan, a BSc graduate, and Dr Sunil Mohan, a Top Scientist at Harvard, is not just 25 years and a few lost hairs. But its Direction chosen, Strategy adopted, guidance received, encouragement given. At Biotecnika, we firmly believe that every child is gifted and must get the right opportunities. Here is your way to the Catalytic Reaction from a Life Science Student to a successful Bioprofessional. We call it Lakshya Scholarship: lakshya.biotecnika.org

Breaking News! We’re excited to share that after a break, we’re diving back into the exciting world of iGEM! 🌱 Of course, this wouldn't have been possible without the generous support from City University of Hong Kong. What is iGEM? The International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition is a global platform that celebrates the fusion of science, creativity, and innovation. Originally designed for undergraduate university students, iGEM has now expanded its horizons to include divisions for high school students, entrepreneurs, community laboratories, and even ‘overgraduates’—because learning knows no bounds! Here’s how it works: 💡 BioBricks and Genetic Engineering: At the start of summer, student teams receive the Distribution Kit, which contains standard, interchangeable genetic components known as BioBricks. These BioBricks include promoters, terminators, reporter elements, and plasmid backbones. Armed with these building blocks, teams work in their local laboratories to engineer biological systems. They can choose to build upon existing projects or create something entirely new. 💡 Project Creation: Teams unleash their creativity, designing projects that involve multiple genes and mechanisms to regulate gene expression. The goal is to produce cells with novel and extraordinary properties. These engineered systems could revolutionize medicine, agriculture, or environmental sustainability. 💡 Annual iGEM Jamboree: At the end of summer, teams from all corners of the globe converge at the iGEM Jamboree in Paris. Here, they present their projects to each other and a panel of approximately 120 scientific judges. In each division (High School, Undergraduate, and Overgraduate), the judges honor outstanding teams by awarding medals and special prizes, including the coveted titles of Grand Prize Winner and Runner-Up. 💡 Medals and Criteria: Teams can earn medals based on specific criteria. For instance: 🥉Bronze: Submitting a new BioBrick to the Parts Registry. 🥈Silver: Documenting the functionality of a part. 🥇Gold: Achieving a proof-of-principle for their project. So, buckle up! Our team is ready to dive into the fascinating world of synthetic biology once again. Stay tuned for updates as we embark on our iGEM journey! 🧬🌟 #iGEM #SyntheticBiology #Innovation #CityU

SDSU Sets New Research Milestone! For the second year in a row, South Dakota State University has set a new record for research expenditures, reaching an impressive $84 million in FY 2024 — a 13.5% increase from last year’s $74 million! This achievement highlights the dedication of SDSU faculty, staff, and students to cutting-edge innovation and research that benefits the public. Private sector partnerships with SDSU hold a massive impact on research growth like this, and the Research Park is an important part of building those relationships. Notable projects from the past year include the restoration of native plants in the Northern Great Plains, research into the role of lean pork in a plant-based diet, efforts to develop resilient electrical grids for rural communities, and work to improve palliative care access across the state. These projects, among many others, are examples of how SDSU research is making an impact across disciplines. As SDSU continues its pursuit of R1 classification, this milestone is a testament to its expanding impact and commitment to excellence.
