♀ UKRAINIAN WOMEN ARE BECOMING THE DRIVING FORCE OF CHANGE In Ukraine, women are playing an increasing role in the labour market. This is also the case in the agribusiness sector where Halychyna Zahid - an investee of IFU - is hiring women to take over for the men, who are defending the country against the Russian aggressor. One of these women is Olya, an incredible woman who breaks stereotypes. As an assistant agronomist, she not only supports vital agricultural research and practice, but also sits behind the wheel of a combine harvester, deftly harvesting crops that will become nutritious feed for the company’s piglets. She is a role model showing that there are no limits to what can be achieved with determination and hard work. During the summer, Halychyna Zahid ran a campaign to attract women to jobs that typically have been male dominated. The offer from the company is for applicants to obtain a tractor driver's license at the expense of the company, a well-paid job, and the opportunity to assist in securing a robust Ukrainian economy during difficult times. #ukraine #impact #farming

Despite wartime challenges, the Ukrainian agricultural sector has maintained remarkable resilience and adaptability, preserving its status as a key global supplier of grains and sunflower oil, accounting for over 10% of international trade. * In 2023, Ukraine exported 16.1 million tons of wheat to 65 countries, 26.2 million tons of corn to 80 countries, and 5.7 million tons of sunflower oil to 130 countries. * Ukraine has over 15,000 agricultural companies controlling 53.9% of its arable land, with 40% integrated into agroholdings. The country also boasts over 31,800 family farms contributing to its agricultural output. * To adapt to wartime challenges, the agribusiness sector has diversified production by increasing the cultivation of vegetables and legumes for the domestic market. Simultaneously, it has invested in processing facilities to reduce dependency on raw agricultural exports. As we observe the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, we stand in solidarity with Indigenous communities worldwide, acknowledging the human rights violations they endure. At Free the Slaves, we are committed to shedding light on these injustices and advocating for the rights of these communities. In Peru, the Ashaninka Indigenous community is particularly at risk, facing exploitation in various forms of modern slavery. Our latest research report, published in collaboration with ONOTZI, highlights the dire situation in the Amazonian regions of Huanuco and Ucayali. Illegal gold mining and logging activities are not only devastating the environment but also stripping the Ashaninka people of their traditional livelihoods in forestry and agriculture. As poverty deepens, a vicious cycle ensues: Ashaninka boys and men are coerced into forced labor, while girls and women are subjected to sexual exploitation in areas surrounding these destructive industries. The Peruvian state's historical neglect of Indigenous communities—failing to provide essential services like bilingual education, healthcare, and employment opportunities—has only exacerbated these vulnerabilities. These conditions have been further exploited by illegal enterprises, leaving the Ashaninka people in a perilous situation. As we highlight this report today, we reaffirm our commitment to fighting against modern slavery and standing with Indigenous communities in their struggle for justice and dignity. We invite you to learn more about these critical issues by reading our full report. 🔗 Link to Peru Report - https://lnkd.in/gjZwU77g #IndigenousPeoplesDay #HumanRights #EndModernSlavery #IndigenousRights

Ukraine's agricultural sector, contributing 8% to the country's GDP, is pivotal for value creation, with the government actively reshaping it to secure vital funding for postwar recovery and seamless EU integration. Investors eyeing opportunities in irrigation infrastructure, grain storage, transport facilities, production, and food processing should align with the Ukraine Faculty Plan—a cornerstone of the EU's financial assistance program. Key focuses include: * Aligning Ukrainian agricultural policies with the new EU Common Agricultural Policy through the 2030 Strategy for Agriculture and Rural Development. * Ongoing land reform developments opening the market to local legal entities since 2024. * Reforms enabling automatic data transfer between the State Land Cadastre and the State Register of Property Rights on Real Estate. * Initiatives for irrigation system development and implementation of the National Strategy on Mine Action, among others. On August 18, 40,000 Indigenous Maasai blocked the Ngorongoro-Serengeti road in #Tanzania to protest human rights violations affecting their land, education, health, and voting rights. Tanzania has recently announced the prohibition of human settlement in and around the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, presenting it as a step forward in #conservation while planning to expand tourism in the region. As the government prepares to increase its revenue from this measure, Maasai pastoralists are being forcibly evicted from their ancestral lands, stripping them of their rights livelihoods. This case of violence and criminalization of Indigenous Peoples in the name of conservation ignores the fact that community-based models have proven time and time again to protect #nature and #biodiversity just as effectively—and in many cases better—than the methods that exclude them. #LandRightsNow Share this post to spread the word and read what civil society organizations have to say about the rights violations in this statement 👇🏽 📚 https://lnkd.in/gmyW44-2

🥔 After the Russian Federation occupied Kherson Oblast, Serhii's farm lost about 75% of its assets. Fortunately, the farm had some land in Zhytomyr Oblast so employees could relocate and resume work. However, the farm still had outstanding loans taken to purchase property in Kherson Oblast, which significantly complicated its ability to restart operations. ✅ Many farmers from frontline areas faced similar challenges, being left without assets but still burdened with loans. To address these issues at the legislative level, USAID AGRO Ukraine project implemented by the Ukrainian Agrarian Council, stepped in to provide support. This project focuses on aiding agricultural producers affected by the war, offers legal assistance and provides practical solutions to help farmers recover and sustain their operations despite the losses. By using only 5% of its #agricultural #lands, DRC can #feed itself. #DRC has a total of 80 million ha of arable land, roughly the size of France and Benelux all together. According to the FAO, DRC's land given its climate have the potential to feed 2 billions people: the whole of Africa and the whole of the European Union. Currently, the country is home to roughly 100 million people. To feed it's people, it will require 5% of Congolese arable land ressources, about 4 million ha. This is roughly the size of one of the provinces of DRC: So, by producing on just 5%, one province such as Kasaï or Kongo Central, DRC could reach #selfsufficiency This is MabeleAgric #target
