Playing marine noise to coral does not sound like a clever idea. But hold onto your snorkel... Underwater speakers broadcasting the vibrant sounds of a thriving coral community could be the key to rejuvenating damaged and degraded reefs. These underwater soundscapes might prevent struggling reefs from turning into ocean graveyards. Researchers, working off the US Virgin Islands in the Caribbean, discovered that coral larvae were up to seven times more likely to settle in a struggling reef when exposed to recordings of the natural sounds—snaps, groans, grunts, and scratches—that compose the symphony of a healthy ecosystem. More work is underway to understand whether other coral species respond to reef sounds in the same way, and whether the corals thrive after settling. SUBMON. Head of Projects. I’m into #environmentaleducation #networking #scicomm #marineconservation #marineanimalforest #participation
We are in Brussels with Tecla Maggioni as part of the #EuropeanOceanDays, diving into a week full of insightful sessions and discussions about the future of our ocean from different perspectives within the EU Mission Ocean. Research, Innovation, BlueParks, and Ocean Literacy are some of the big topics we are actively involved, and we're especially proud to present two innovative projects, OCEAN CITIZEN and SEA2SEE Project, from the communication and engagement perspective. Today, we are proud to showcase SUBMON's best innovative practices as a response to the big challenges for marine conservation. 💙 Yesterday's main thoughts: Implementing a BLUE DEAL in the EU will provide a real tool for ocean protection. #EUMIssion #2050Vision #MissionOcean

𝓗𝓪𝓿𝓮 𝔂𝓸𝓾 𝓮𝓿𝓮𝓻 𝓱𝓮𝓪𝓻𝓭 𝓽𝓱𝓮 𝓼𝓸𝓾𝓷𝓭𝓼 𝓸𝓯 𝓬𝓸𝓻𝓪𝓵 𝓻𝓮𝓮𝓯𝓼 ❓ Climate change causes coral bleaching, and it is assumed that 90% of the corals would have disappeared by 2050 if nothing change 🚮 At Reef Pulse they combine passive acoustics and artificial intelligence to monitor the health and functioning of coral reefs 💫 By studying the ambient sound on coral reef with 𝗦𝗬𝗟𝗘𝗡𝗖𝗘-𝗟𝗣 recorder over a 6️⃣ months continuous period, a soundscape is then created🔋 This #soundscape will reflect the ecological state of the ecosystem, easily visualized on maps and graphs to tell us the history of the reefs 📖 A warm thanks to #ReefPulse for bringing #RTsys in this adventure, Bravo👏 for the trophy winner of i-Lab competition from #France2030 🏆 as well as for the share of these high-quality sounds of the underwater life 🔊 Passive acoustics is the only method allowing continuous and standardized monitoring of underwater ecosystems for marine parks, research laboratories and the underwater scientific community 📢 Follow us in this adventure 🎧🐠🌊♻️ #pam #sylence #resea #underwaternoise #unm #offshorewind #oceantech #saveouroceans #saveourplanet
