Green financing is crucial. Clean energy is estimated to offer a global investment opportunity of $100 trillion, making it a lucrative prospect for private and public investors. Looking forward to heading to #cop28 shortly where SSE will again have a packed programme of engagement as we seek to support the effort to deliver a trebling of renewable electricity generation by 2030. It can be an overwhelming, humbling but also inspiring experience to see just how much is being done to advance the clean energy transition globally. We hope to make a small but meaningful contribution to this by sharing some of the learnings we’ve gained in areas like offshore wind, building grids to connect and transport it and providing flexible energy to back it up. Because keeping a 1.5C pathway within reach has to start with a decarbonised energy sector. But mainly we want to engage with and learn from others so please do connect if you are planning to be there. In that spirit, although we operate predominantly in the UK and Ireland we know the transition needs to be a global one. So we are pleased to have grant funded an important piece of work by the Oxford Smith School which seeks to explore how to accelerate the clean energy transition in the Global South by looking through a developer’s lens. The report is the first of a three part series and launches on Energy Day next Tuesday, appropriately on the SDG7 Pavilion. Details below 👇⚡️

Maximizing (net) impact requires minimizing negative impact. It takes asset managers such as Omnes daring to show a balanced picture and be transparent about the adverse impacts that accompany the positive impact generated throughout their renewable energy, sustainable cities, deeptech and co-investment strategies (p. 4-5). Both impacts are presented next to each other in an impressive (first!) Sustainability Report. I specifically like the insightful value chain illustration (p. 26-27), reflective portfolio company interviews (p. 31) and openness on methodological challenges (p. 48). We’re proud that the Australian Industry Energy Transitions Initiative (ETI) is a finalist for the 2024 Banksia Foundation Net Zero Action Award. Co-convened by Climateworks Centre and Climate-KIC Australia, the Australian Industry ETI brought together companies representing around a fifth of Australia's industrial emissions and a third of the ASX100 market value. We developed net zero pathways showing Australia can cut more than 90 per cent of emissions from five heavy industry supply chains by 2050. The initiative was delivered in partnership with the Energy Transitions Commission, RMI, CSIRO and BloombergNEF and with support from Australian Industry Greenhouse Network, Australian Industry Group (Ai Group) and Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA). Another leap in the #SustainableFinance space, this time through the #EU-#Catalyst partnership, a collaboration between the European Commission, European Investment Bank (EIB), and Breakthrough Energy Catalyst. This partnership programme has just announced its first two funded projects: Ørsted's FlagshipONE and Energy Dome's Ottana CO2 Battery. 🎄 #FlagshipONE, located in #Sweden, aims to become Europe's largest #eMethanol production facility, providing #GreenFuel for #Shipping by using captured #CO2 and #Renewable #Hydrogen. 🎄 The Ottana Energia S.p.A. CO2 #Battery project, based in #Sardinia, develops long-duration #EnergyStorage technology, more competitive than lithium-ion batteries. 🎄 This partnership, launched at #COP26, focuses on developing large-scale #GreenTech projects in Europe and boosting investments in critical #ClimateTechnologies. 🎄 The #EIB, as a key partner, is set to deploy up to €420 million for these innovative projects, with funding from #HorizonEurope and the #InnovationFund.
