Renewable energy plays a critical role in meeting rising energy needs, closing the energy access gap, and aligning with the Paris Agreement ♻️☀️💡. But the sector also comes with risks and impacts, including GHG emissions from supply chains (also called Scope 3 emissions). How can renewable energy developers decarbonize their supply chains? And what value does this bring beyond compliance? The progress towards achieving the #COP28-agreed target of tripling renewable energy capacity to at least 11 TW by 2030 faces significant challenges, as outlined in the report from International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) The annual growth rate of #renewable capacity in 2023 stood at 14.0%, the highest since 2000. However, this rate falls short of meeting the target. If the current historical growth rate of 10.0% since 2017 persists, the projected renewable capacity by 2030 would only reach 7.5 TW, indicating a shortfall of 3.7 TW (32.6%) from the stipulated goal. To align with the COP28 #target, a #minimum annual growth rate of 16.1% from 2022 to 2030 is now indispensable. The current growth trajectory necessitates a substantial acceleration to bridge the gap between the actual growth rate and the targeted expansion rate as far as I could read in the last IRENA report. #reinhausen #energytransition #readyforenergytransition

“The transition to clean energy is happening worldwide and it’s unstoppable. It’s not a question of ‘if’, it’s just a matter of ‘how soon’ – and the sooner the better for all of us,” said IEA executive director Fatih Birol. “Governments, companies and investors need to get behind clean energy transitions rather than hindering them. Every country needs to find its own pathway, but international cooperation is crucial for accelerating clean #netzero #climaterisk #climatesolutions #renewables #ESG
