Channeling Climate Finance in Water & Tree planting Rural Projects - Ending hunger & poverty while saving our planet - Breaking silos to fund underserved African Climate Champions - Bridging gaps
CLIMATE ACTION: An excellent initiative but the challenge is connecting the missing and complimentary parts in implementation.
Funding is there but farmers & development frontline workers in least developed countries live in silos (so do DFIs & MDBs). There are disconnects between the main actors so we must break the deep silos and bridge the gap to funnel this funding to the right projects.
Too much funding is diluted in inefficiency, high overheads and at times theft. Language barriers, cultural differences, cross-border collaboration do not simplify the issue, but it can be done with the right dynamic partners.
Thank you to The Netherlands and Minister Liesje Schreinemacher for your formidable support to IFAD’s resource mobilization efforts with a $150 million contribution.

On July 8, 2024, South Sudan ratified the Nile Basin Cooperative Framework Agreement (CFA), paving the way for the CFA to come into force sixty days after South Sudan deposits its ratification with the African Union, as stipulated in Article 42.
While the impending entry into force of the CFA is a landmark development for the upstream Nile Basin States, its rejection by the downstream States—Egypt and Sudan—poses significant challenges to cooperative management of the Nile watercourse.
In this piece for EJIL: Talk!, I scrutinize the ramifications of the CFA’s entry into force. I briefly review the negotiation history of the CFA, critically examine its salient features, and reflect on the challenges and prospects of its implementation. I argue that the impending entry into force of the CFA is not as rosy as it seems and that ensuring the participation of Egypt and Sudan in the Nile River Basin Commission (NRBC) is still paramount for sustainable management of the Nile watercourse.
