Once you know spelling and grammar, what else is there for an editor to learn? Quite a lot, actually – it may surprise you to know that spelling and grammar are actually a pretty small proportion of what we do. For example, we use tools to increase accuracy and/or efficiency. And this week, one of my tools failed. I cast about for other options that would give greater accuracy than the old-fashioned manual method. And I remembered a conference session that Marieke Krijnen, PhD had given recently on this very topic. Well, it turned out that 'recent' session was in September 2022 😮 Anyway, I dug out the notes and sure enough I found my answer. Problem solved and it's not just about saving me time (although that's important, too, given that quality reduces with tiredness) – I'm pretty sure the software flagged a couple of things that I'd have missed if I'd had to do that task manually. So, thank you to the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP) for the annual conference and to Marieke for sharing expertise. This is why editors are always learning. https://lnkd.in/eniePjCJ..

🙋♀️ Can you help us to put together an interesting programme? We are soliciting striking proposals for the invited programme of our 2025 Annual Meeting in Paris 🎉 What do we expect: ✔ The title of the proposed session ✔ The titles for two lectures within this session ✔ The names of the (two) speakers related to the proposed lectures ✔ The e-mail address of each speaker We would like to highlight the importance of a coherent scientific programme with top quality speakers 💯 Please mention only names of speakers that you have heard lecturing yourself and that you know are very good, educational, top quality speakers. Excellence in educational quality and the ability to explain difficult things in an easy way, should precede over other qualities. Kindly note that you cannot propose yourself as a speaker! 🎯 You can also submit a proposal for the keynote lecture. In that case, we only need one lecture title and the name and email address of one speaker. Before submitting your proposal, please check the list with topics that were on the programme of the previous Annual Meetings (to avoid duplication of subjects). ⏰ Submission deadline = 16 October 2023 ⏰ so no time to waste! To submit your proposal, go to our online application using this link 🔗 https://lnkd.in/e4yyg7PP

Today I went to the TNO-ESI Symposium. Just as last year, I really liked the presentations. Some things are immediately usable, some thing will probably pop up in my head in a relevant situation months or years from now. Some talks have given some great insights into failures, or at least difficulties encountered, and that openness was great to hear. Content, no sales pitch! One of the highlights was the opening academic keynote by Mieke van der Bijl-Brouwer. Some very nice insights on integrating technical & social systems. Here's my graphical summary (with QR codes for background info)! *Edit:* In the mobile view it's quite easy to zoom in and out of the picture. On a desktop, it's easier to right-click on it and choose "open picture in new tab". Now you can scroll and zoom more easily!

How are you and your students spending the majority of your time together? Researchers have long recognized that time on task, or time spent engaged in instructional activities, significantly predicts students’ achievement (e.g., Fisher, 2009). Maximizing high quality instructional time takes the ability to appropriately match your repertoire of skills to your content, context, and audience. Join us in June to further your repertoire. https://lnkd.in/gxAaXFAd
