The present policies are helping to do that in the form of iDEX - DIO, Invest India or Startup India. The pursuit of a #competitive edge has become paramount in this era of fierce #rivalry, not only for countries but also for #privatecompanies, #explains Cdr. Rahul Verma, former TDAC, Indian Navy. I applaud the exhaustive efforts of the Army to ‘shoe-horn’ innovation into its standard bureaucratic structure (the same is true for the other Services, too) as described in this article. Given the number of failed previous attempts to mainstream innovation in all the Services, one has to wonder why this effort will succeed when every other one failed. One has to also wonder if trying to squeeze and encourage innovation in organizations focused on the status quo of maintaining current readiness is the only or best option. Maybe, the time is right for a new approach to military innovation (https://lnkd.in/egu82NZX).

Proximity fuzes play a pivotal role in maximizing the effectiveness of munitions by ensuring detonation in close proximity to the intended target. Their significance extends across both air and ground defence operations, enabling airburst detonations that result in greater impact while simultaneously minimizing harm to non-combatants. However, despite the pivotal role of Proximity Fuzes in our defence operations, the overreliance on imports poses strategic risks to our nation. These risks manifest as supply disruptions, exorbitant expenses, design constraints, and the looming threat of economic coercion. In a bid to fortify our self-reliance and foster the indigenous production of proximity fuzes, Bharath Electronics Limited (BEL) has launched its challenges in the 10th Defence India Startup Challenge (DISC) as part of iDEX. This offers innovators, startups & MSMEs the chance to vie for grants of up to ₹1.5 Crores and collaborate with BEL in the endeavour to indigenize: 1. Aerial bomb fuze proximity sensor 2. Naval artillery fuze proximity sensor 3. Artillery fuze proximity sensor for activation at a target height of 10±6 meters. The Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) initiative, launched by the Government of India in April 2018, represents a transformative approach to fostering innovation within the defence sector. Managed by the Defence Innovation Organization (DIO), iDEX aims to engage a wide array of participants including startups, MSMEs, individual innovators, R&D institutes, and academia in the development of innovative technologies for defence and aerospace. iDEX has made significant strides, having received over 7,500 applications across various challenge categories like the Defence India Startup Challenges (DISC), Prime, and Open Challenge. This initiative has not only generated thousands of jobs but also attracted Indian talent back to the country, underscoring its success in fostering a vibrant ecosystem of innovation within the defence sector. A notable achievement under iDEX includes the signing of its 250th contract, marking a significant milestone in the initiative's journey. This was achieved during an event that saw the exchange of the first iDEX contract under Mission DefSpace, aimed at developing a micropropulsion system for cubesats, and the 100th SPRINT (Navy) contract, focused on developing a prototype for a lightweight communication system. These contracts illustrate iDEX's broad scope, addressing needs from space technology to naval communications, demonstrating its pivotal role in advancing India's defence capabilities through innovation. Furthermore, iDEX has been instrumental in propelling India towards becoming one of the world's largest defence innovation ecosystems. The Defence Secretary's confidence in iDEX helping India achieve this status speaks volumes about the initiative's potential and its alignment with the nation's strategic objectives in defence manufacturing and technology development. Through initiatives like Mission DefSpace and SPRINT, iDEX is not only enhancing India's defence technological capabilities but also contributing significantly to the 'Make in India' initiative by fostering indigenous innovation and self-reliance in defence production. The initiative's success in engaging a wide array of innovators and providing them with the necessary support underscores the government's commitment to nurturing an ecosystem that can meet the contemporary and future needs of India's defence sector.

Unlocking Opportunities: India-US Defense Sector Collaboration With the recent liberalization of FDI policies in the Defense & Aerospace Sector, both Indian and foreign investors are primed to capitalize on strategic partnerships and foster growth. I recently participated in a webinar organized by the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) and iDEX Defence Innovation Organization as part of the India-U.S. Defense Acceleration Ecosystem @INDUS-X on February 9th. The discussion brought to light intriguing perspectives for Indian founders in the Defense & Aerospace sector :- Focus Areas for Indian Investors: Satellite and rockets, robotics, infrastructure construction, semiconductors, and drones emerge as key sectors attracting Indian investment. Focus Areas for US Investors: Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR), domain awareness, unmanned systems, and space technology are identified as areas of interest for US investors. Clear Ownership and Security Clearance: Transparency in ownership and adherence to security clearance protocols, particularly under US DoD norms, are emphasized due to counterintelligence concerns. Regulatory Compliance: Adherence to domestic and export regulatory compliance and licensing is paramount. Founders must prioritize this from the early stages to ensure smooth operations, including compliance requirements for intended export destinations. Technology Transfer (ToT) Opportunities: Leveraging US technology with Indian manufacturing cost advantages for global business opportunities is highlighted. A clear vision about potential markets beyond domestic Indian markets is essential for success. Supply Chain Security: Investors evaluate startups or MSMEs based on factors like cost, quality, sustainability, reliability, and processes within the supply chain. Cybersecurity and Data Protection: Implementing robust cybersecurity measures from the outset is crucial to protect intellectual property and prevent technology leakage to competitors. Indian FDI in the USA: The webinar underscores mutual business growth fostered through Indian investments in US companies. In 2022 alone, nearly $3.5 billion USD was invested, creating 72,000 jobs, highlighting the positive trajectory of bilateral investment relations. The opening up of FDI in India's defense sector presents significant opportunities for both Indian and US investors. With careful consideration of these key points and collaboration, the Indian Defence and aerospace sector is well poised to leverage its strengths to emerging opportunities.
