It is with a heavy heart that I share the news of a young 5 year old boy who tragically lost his life in a temporary migrant shelter located in the city’s Pilsen neighborhood. This heartbreaking incident underscores the urgent need to address the conditions faced by migrants in shelters. As a Latino, Hispanic, father, I cannot help but wonder: how do we allow this to happen? How do we fail to protect the most vulnerable among us? How do we turn a blind eye to the suffering of our brothers and sisters? A mother, who came to this country in search of a better life, had to endure the challenges of navigating a new culture, facing a freezing winter for the very first time, and now losing her son too. This is unjust. In the face of adversity, I am taking a stand. I am in the process of developing a robust, scalable, and reproducible refugee family sponsorship plan. This initiative is not just a plan, but a promise to address three fundamental needs: housing, education, and employment. Built on the bedrock of education, this plan aims to provide immediate relief and long-term stability to families in need. However, I cannot do this alone. I need the support and input of knowledgeable Chicagoans who care about the plight of migrants in our city. How can we address the crisis specifically in the three areas of housing, education and employment? I invite you to share your advice and knowledge with me and join this conversation. Many people are struggling in this season of giving, and they need our help. How have you been helping others in your community? What thoughts and ideas do you have to inspire sharing of gifts and talents? Please share your comments below. Together, we can make a difference. #SeasonOfGiving #ChicagoMigrantRights #EducationForAll #FamilySponsorship #HousingForAll #EmploymentOpportunities #CommunitySupport #KindnessMatters #BeTheChange #MakeADifference

Individuals who have been trafficked face significant obstacles in securing safe housing, which can lead to them staying in dangerous situations. Here are a few examples of these barriers: 👉Group housing can feel unsafe for victims, as it can often resemble their previous trafficking experience. 👉If you are here on a temporary work visa, you do not qualify for subsidized or government-run housing unless you have permanent residency, refugee status, or citizenship. 👉Family housing can be too expensive for victims. 👉There is limited space for men in shelters. Join us on October 24, 2023, at noon for a livestream discussion on the challenges of safe housing for trafficking survivors, with Dr. Amanda Noble, Manager of Research and Evaluation at Covenant House Toronto, Jeneane Fast, a Research & Policy Associate with the Canadian Centre to End Human Trafficking, ACT Alberta Educator Maria Osiowy, and Victim Response Coordinator Michelle Trudeau. Our panel will explore the barriers and what steps can be taken to address them. "We're supporting [refugees and immigrants in] eight hotels in eastern Massachusetts, and one of our goals is to get as many people out of there and into apartments and into more permanent living situations," said Jeff Thielman, IINE President and CEO, about the $10 million included in Massachusetts's budget to help #resettlement agencies. IINE hopes to use the funding to help prevent people from going into shelters in the first place. IF YOU ARE NOT PART OF A PERMANENT AND LASTING SOLUTION TO THE AFFORDABLE HOUSING CRISIS AND HOMELESSNESS, YOU ARE THE PROBLEM! THE AFFORDABLE HOUSING INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX IS BROKEN AND NOT WORKING FOR AMERICAN TAXPAYERS Veteran Housing Corp would ask every TAXPAYER to demand and get answers from their elected and appointed government officials the below questions as they relate to any affordable, workforce, or supportive housing project in your community! 1. How much local, state, and federal funding, tax credits, or other government benefits or incentives did the project receive? 2. What is the affordability period for each project? Is the affordability period permanent and in perpetuity? 3. What guarantees exist have your local, state, and federal government officials obtained in writing that rents will not go up or that tenants will not be displaced or evicted after the "affordability period expires? Every local, state, and federal housing authority and affordable or workforce housing stakeholder should adopt the State of Vermont's "permanent affordability" policy as a model for all future government funded or subsidized housing projects or developments, no exceptions! https://lnkd.in/eFEUC8c8 Additionally, local, state and federal housing agencies should look to the Helsinki, FINLAND MODEL of ending homelessness by providing affordable housing for all 'It’s a miracle': Helsinki's radical solution to homelessness https://lnkd.in/er9HZSQU Even the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development AGREES THAT adopting FINLAND'S MODEL OF ERADICATING HOMELESSNESS may be of great value to resolving the affordable housing and homelessness crises in America https://lnkd.in/gkSZWYRU
New York City Mayor Adams has decided to systematically deny immigrant workers and asylum seekers equal access to the city's shelter system, in an agreement recently reached with the Coalition for the Homeless and the Legal Aid Society. "When the city gives a vulnerable group of predominantly people of color differential and lesser legal treatment, while simultaneously dehumanizing and degrading them, no one can be surprised when the broader public increasingly comes to regard that same group as lesser."
