New article out. Huge congrats to Kevin, first author, whose MA thesis this reports on. https://lnkd.in/eajHiM36 Learning Far Beyond the Classroom: An Exploratory Study of Self-Directed Learning Activities and Strategies of Adult L2 Learners in Japan Kevin Clark, Anaheim University Hayo Reinders, Anaheim University and King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi Abstract There exists a language learning industry in Japan that caters to adult learners. However, a significant number of adults do not engage in such services but rather study on their own. By better understanding this segment of the population, more effective resources can be developed and made available to L2 learners who struggle after they have left formal education. In this study, eight adult learners who engaged in self-directed learning (SDL) were asked to track their learning activities over the course of three weeks by maintaining a language diary. This was followed by interviews to gather information about the reasons behind their choices and the strategies they employed during the activities within the context of the SDL process (Reinders, 2020). The initial results showed that few learners used strategies to enhance their L2 learning, as the resources and activities were often chosen based on reasons unrelated to language learning, such as entertainment. This suggests that they may benefit from some form of guidance to enhance their self-directed learning.

The upcoming academic year 2024-2025 in India will witness the implementation of the National Curriculum Framework (NCF 2023). Here are the key highlights of NCF 2023: Board Examinations ----------------------- Board exams for classes 10 and 12, which were previously conducted once a year, will now be conducted twice a year. Scores from the examination in which a student performs better will be considered final. Mandatory Subjects: ----------------------- Classes 9 and 10 will now have seven mandatory subjects instead of five. Classes 11 and 12 will have six mandatory subjects instead of four. Native Languages and Multilingualism: ----------------------- Studying at least two native languages out of a total of three will become mandatory for students up to Class 10. For classes 11 and 12, at least one of two languages should be a native language. Subject Groups and Selection: ------------------------------ The earlier streams of arts, science, and commerce will be replaced by three groups of subjects. Students will have to choose six or seven subjects, depending on their class, from these groups. The groups include art education, vocational education, physical education, social sciences, humanities, interdisciplinary subjects, science, mathematics, and computational thinking. Local and Regional Content: ----------------------- The social sciences syllabus for classes 6 to 8 will have local and regional content in addition to national and global content. Around 20% of the syllabus will be of local relevance, 30% of regional importance, and the remaining split between national (30%) and global (20%) relevance. Committees and Implementation: ----------------------- NCF 2023 was developed by a 13-member steering committee led by K Kasturirangan. The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) will create textbooks in line with this framework for classes 3 to 12. Changes are expected to reflect in CBSE syllabus and textbooks, with new textbooks to be introduced from the 2024-25 academic year. State Adoption of Recommendations: ----------------------- The extent to which states will adopt the recommendations of NCF 2023 through the State Curriculum Framework for School Education remains to be seen, especially in light of certain states like Karnataka refusing to implement NEP 2020. https://lnkd.in/gd6Hb4j5

When you stare - either you're in love, or you just stare. True, when you want to learn something hard, never how much easy it might be, it must have such interest to go deeper, beyond your fingers (so to speak). Passion is another word of it, but passion can die over time. Perhaps it is like throwing the rubbish out every night - you have no interest on the rubbish, but if you look closely how you might reduce the rubbish so that you don't have to put it out every night, you have the interest on the trash for the rubbish that you have to put out anyway. 'Had' to. Not many startup/enterprenuer have that 'had'. Anyway, related on the teaching English for STEM (Maths and Science), previously many from academia messaged personally that they strongly want English for maths and science as they themselves struggling to convert English to Bahasa Melayu, what's more to make the student understand on what being taught. Japan, China, Germany - one of few countries where academicians argued that non-English entities can still strive in science engineering without the need to use English as medium. But the same academicians never want to mention Brazil, Argentina, Sudan, Vietnam, Gohead-Gostan countries because they can't make an argument out of it. Malaysia has TWO ministries to handle education - MOHE and MOE. Even in Japan, China, Germany they only have ONE ministry for it. Haiyaaaa. People always say two heads is better than one. In this case, people say that when you see two stupid people arguing, you'd better go elsewhere. And when education allocated with the biggest ballooning budget with MoE and MoHE doesn't know what they are doing between themselves, not only syllabus are confusing, but the language as a medium's issue is still persist - you'll know that Malaysia does not have backups for high-tech talents in few years time. Maybe Malaysia can just be the largest lawyer-producing grads in the world. Unlike people say that people who go to hell first are lawyers, perhaps Malaysian lawyers are actually angelic by nature (this statement is made 'Without Prejudice') and we have to be dead first to prove otherwise. *Picture was part of 26 pages PDF given by an old friend (a Gandalf in finite element), about how he learned machine/deep learning and physic-based neural network, producing codes from scratch with proven 1000 times of training - all in 45 days, in English. He personally asked those who were against STEM in English, to produce similar in 45 days time in Bahasa Melayu. #malaysia #twistcode #machinelearning #deeplearning #finiteelementanalysis #maths #englishforstem #malaysiadigital #mydigital #education #edukesyen #lawyerswillgotohellfirsttheysay #mampuskita

‘Being able to read memes is just as important as being able to read Shakespeare for kids of our day.’ Mate. Shifting the goalposts of what is considered literacy is not going to change the fact that a lot of our young people *can’t read*. Disproportionately Māori, Pacific and low income kids can’t read We have to question what’s happening in NCEA if it’s using memes to test literacy. Interperation of visual art is one thing, a meme is something else. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good meme just like everyone else. But let’s not get confused about what is and isn’t literacy. There are genuine concerns that children aren’t being taught how to actually read. I have to question whether the NCEA standards are slipping because less and less kids can read and falling pass rates would reflect poorly on the ministry of Education. I spoke to a year 13 who said that in English all they do is study films. Shakespeare isn’t easy. But we study it because the themes and ideas are timeless. Being able to finish a novel should be a standard expectation of a young person. We shouldn’t pander to apologists who don’t want to be mean and call it what it is. Which is that we’ve been failing children by not teaching them how to read. I’m beyond baffled at this university academic’s stance on language. We might be living in a visual world but so much knowledge and communication is still done through *reading*. Reading unlocks so much for a child. It makes reading enjoyable and allows a child to learn more complex topics like science and the liberal arts. Being able to read is one of the greatest tools for upward social movement. So no, ‘reading’ memes are not the same as reading a book. #literacy #reading #education #childdevelopment #meme #english #literature #aotearoa #newzealand
