Dear MHHRI friends, We are responsible for parts of the program at the Human International Documentary Film Festival . We want to use the festival to maintain focus on Ukraine. In recent months, we have witnessed how children have been deprived of all their rights, and in many places, they seem to have become military targets. Children worldwide experience horrendous acts during the war, characterized by inadequate or no protection. These serious human rights violations have serious short- and long-term consequences for children and for society as a whole. About the film: "In the Rearview" Maciek's car has eight seats. They are regularly filled with people fleeing from Ukraine to Poland, France, and Germany. As the camera rolls, adults, children, and strangers talk about their lives, the animals they left behind, and the bombs they have seen. The film is an important reminder that those fleeing are ordinary people with sorrows, joys, relationships, hopes, and dreams. The discussion takes place after the film, which starts at 5:00 PM on Wednesday, March 6th, at Vegascene. Remember to buy tickets.

Should the Arts Sector be a delivery agent for the new government's 5 Missions (see below)? That appears to be what Arts Council England is positioning the sector as. I believe such a strategy involves big risks: An "Instrumentalist" approach (where art only exists to serve a (political) purpose) risks replacing the principle of arms-length funding with vassal funding. Were that to happen, artists become delivery agents of the state, and audiences become whomsoever the government wants them to be. At this transformative moment in UK history, doesn't the sector more than ever need strong voices advocating for artistic freedom, and for excellence being the driver of new audiences? * The 5 missions are: Kickstart economic growth, Make Britain a clean energy superpower, Reduce violent crime, Reform childcare & education, and Fix the NHS.

The Association of Ukrainian Women in Belgium cordially invites you to the series of #Ukrainian film screenings in #Brussels, Belgium. From Wednesday, February 14th, to Wednesday, May 8th, Comité belge du Réseau européen de solidarité Ukraine is organizing a Ukrainian film festival at the Université libre de Bruxelles. Six movies have been selected, showcasing the diverse landscape of Ukrainian cinema. This includes two classics from the sixties produced in Soviet Ukrainian studios, two recent fiction films, and two recent documentaries. These films aim to immerse viewers in the Ukrainian perspective, providing insight into the strength and tensions within Ukrainian society. They also seek to explain that the current war is not just about territorial conquest by Russia but is also a conflict aimed at dismantling a society perceived as an existential threat by the Kremlin due to its diversity. Each film screening will be followed by a discussion, and when possible, filmmakers will participate via video conference. Additionally, concrete solidarity projects with Ukraine will be presented. All screenings take place in auditorium AZ1.301 (Building A on Franklin-Roosevelt Avenue), with free entry. A voluntary contribution will be requested, and the entire amount will go towards concrete solidarity projects in Ukraine. The films will be shown in their original language (Ukrainian or Russian) with French subtitles. An intriguing tale of recently uncovered fakes located in museums, private collections and exhibitions--Over the course of twenty years, dozens of paintings from a private collection entered the art market as well as the collections of major European and American museums, only for their provenance to be unravelled by science and some of the world's leading experts. This is also such a wonderful tribute to our esteemed late colleague Dr. Jilleen Nadolny. As an expert in #artprovenance #research, I cannot emphasize enough that #provenance, #scientific and external #expert reports are pivotal. All art trade enterprises need to obey to a strict professional code of ethics but sadly enough, oftentimes neglect this time consuming effort. Here's my article on 'Beneath the Rubble: Documenting Devastation and Loss in Mariupol,' a new research project and documentary film created by the organizations SITU Research, Truth Hounds, and Human Rights Watch. The investigative team synthesized vast amounts of footage and disparate sources of information, including 240 interviews, 850 photos and videos, documents and data, and dozens of satellite images. The result is a 224-page report, a 22-minute video, and an online feature with a comprehensive 3D digital damage assessment, an analysis of graves to help estimate the death toll, and an organogram with Russian units and commanders involved in apparent war crimes. https://bit.ly/MariupolDoc
