“We create spaces for amazing encounters between people and technology.” - iart - studio for media architectures iart, founded in Basel in 2001, is dedicated to the dynamic discipline of media architecture. An interdisciplinary approach and the use of the latest digital technologies ensure spectacular installations that expand spaces, while integrating seamlessly into their surroundings. Close coordination with architects, artists and clients such as museums or companies is just as indispensable as constant further development. That is why the studio’s founder Valentin Benjamin Spiess always has an eye on the future possibilities of digital media design: “AI will certainly also make its way into this field. In addition to the generative aspects of AI, we are particularly interested in the participatory approaches associated with it: What if I could talk to a building? What if a media facade reacted to me personally?” The agency has been awarded six times in the Red Dot Design Award. Here are some of the winning projects: 🔆 The Novartis Pavilion, fitted with 10,000 solar panels, is even fascinating from a distance: the various motifs for the illuminated images were developed by artists in cooperation with Novartis scientists. The solar panels produce more electricity than is needed for the illumination – sustainability meets aesthetics. It was designed together with AMDL CIRCLE and Michele De Lucchi. 🏛️ The facade of the new building for the Kunstmuseum Basel is encircled at a height of twelve metres by a three metres high frieze with horizontal joints that are cast in shadow by the incident daylight. White LEDs are placed into the joints so they cannot be seen from the street yet precisely illuminate the specially formed grooves. Reflection on the light-coloured bricks of the frieze thus creates an indirect light that can be used to display both text and graphics. It was designed in collaboration with Christ & Gantenbein. 🙂 MegaFaces is a cross-platform project conceived and built for the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics. Formed by 11,000 telescopic actuators the kinetic facade is able to transform in three dimensions to recreate visitors’ faces at monumental scale. The aim was to create a monument to celebrate people. Facial impressions are relayed to the facade from 3D scans made in proprietary 3D photo booths within the building. An algorithm transforms the faces on-the-fly considering day lighting, scale, rotation and colour. The resultant portraits appear three at a time, at eight metres tall. iart designed together with Asif Khan Ltd. for MegaFon. Congratulations to iart – studio for media architectures for this accomplishment! More projects from iart can be found here 👉 https://lnkd.in/emhzhWnE #RedDotAward #RedDotWinner #CommunicationDesign
