Here's the data for our first poll question: Which 3 macro categories receive the greatest share of gondola end display support across Woolworth's & Coles? Votes were: 1. Confect, Carb Bevs, Snacks: 52% =2. Laundry, Confect, Snacks: 24% =2. Snacks, Beauty, Confect: 24% 4. Beauty, Hot Bevs, Confect: 0% The actual results are: Snacks, Beauty, Confect. All of these 3 macro categories were in the Top 3 with the greatest share of display in both WW & Coles but interestingly Beauty was #1 in WW with 16.7% share of display vs #3 in Coles with 9.6% share of display. Snacks receives between 120-150 basis points of additional display in both WW and Coles when compared to confectionery, which makes sense when you consider the physical size of products.

The recent Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) Four Corners report, accompanied by today's article on ABC News, sheds light on a practice that's been an open secret within our industry: the disguising of "home brand" alcohol by major retailers like Coles and Woolworths. While this may not be breaking news for those in the field, it's heartening to see it gain broader attention. The growing trend of branding these products to mimic premium independent labels is particularly concerning, especially since these mass-produced products can be much more competitive in price. It not only adds a layer of complexity to the market but also sows confusion among consumers, undermining consumer trust in an era where brand integrity is more critical than ever. Globally, independent brewers, distillers, and winemakers face significant headwinds navigating economic challenges, including inflation, excises, market behaviours and rising production costs. Each week, we hear that loved brands face financial challenges, with Big Shed Brewing Concern and Hawkers Beer recently declaring voluntary administration. As consumers and industry, we must advocate for greater transparency, not only in terms of production but also regarding nutritional, health, and tax/excise information, giving the consumer the tools to make informed buying decisions. The alcohol industry should be champions for the values of quality and transparency, ensuring the promotion of safe, ethical consumption, catering to the evolving preferences of consumers, and contributing to building a more trustworthy and transparent industry. The rising trends of moderation, quality, and consumer choice is a positive one that should be encouraged, but not at the expense of the craft industry. I don't have all the answers, but I do believe that the alcohol industry needs to find ways to communicate and engage better with consumers, strengthen trust and be more transparent. Boisson is owed a big Thank You for what they have done for the Non-Alcoholic Adult Beverage category and Giesen Group Limited's brand Giesen 0%. They were early adopters and helped legitimize Non-Alc Wine, Beer, and Spirits. As we await the future of Boisson, there are still other great Non-Alc Ecommerce options; Better Rhodes, ProofNoMore, and The Zero Proof are a few of many examples. The Non-Alc category continues to grow more and more, large grocery chains are adding products to their stores. Whole Foods Market, CVS Health, Walmart, Kroger, Trader Joe's, Albertsons Companies, Meijer, and Wegmans Food Markets have all started grasping the category. Total Wine & More, Binny's Beverage Depot, and BevMo! all adopted early in the liquor channel. The list is legitimate. Non-Alc products are not just for those that don't drink alcohol. A majority of those buying Non-Alc Wine, Beer, and Spirits are also drinking alcoholic beverages.
