Dive into our latest infographic summary, which unveils the factors influencing pedestrian walking behaviors in cities. Promoting active travel is essential to achieve sustainability, and I hope these findings will guide policy and further research in this field. A key message for city planners, policymakers, researchers, and developers is this: Humans are integral to the infrastructure. Their perception and interaction with the built environment is as crucial as the environment itself. Such insights are vital for preventing disparities in all areas. For more information, you can access the full paper here (open access): https://lnkd.in/d7QanR3G A massive shout-out to my former PhD student, Dr. Nandita Basu, who spearheaded this paper—marking a grand finale to her doctoral journey. Gratitude extended to Liton Kamruzzaman, Shimul (Md Mazharul) Haque, and Mark King for their invaluable contributions. This research forms an integral part of a more extensive research initiative, focused on mitigating climate risks arising from transportation, which I have continued at TU Delft | Technology, Policy and Management. As professor at Department of Marine Technology (IMT) - NTNU I am proud that NTNU is taking part in this tremendous important mission of decarbonizating shipping. This is one of the most transformative shifts in transportation since we did go from sailing to steam and then oil fuels. There is no silver bullet in terms of fuel types and energy sources. We are in hurry to take action meeting emissions goals of greenhouse gases. There will be hybrid solutions including batteries, green and blue fuels, wind assisted propulsion using sails, nuclear… New supply chains of fueling must be developed. Norway can play an important role in the transition by producing blue fuels from natural gas with CCS. The cost of energy will increase leading to exciting times for the field of marine technology. Everything is in play again optimizing designs and solutions. This is also the time where new business positions will be taken.
We are excited to announce the expansion of our Partnership Platform! With four Academic Partners, we are strengthening collaboration between scientists in research projects led by the Center and leading academic institutions within the maritime sector. The partnerships will support increased transparency and knowledge sharing between the maritime industry and academia, as well as development of the competencies required of future decision-makers and transition enablers. ''We are excited to welcome our first academic partners to the Center. As a science-based research and development organization, we are committed to both learning from academia and contributing to the academic community, inspiring scientists globally, developing competencies, and closing knowledge gaps. With University of Michigan, Maritime Research Alliance, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and World Maritime University onboard, we can now move in new directions faster to accelerate the maritime industry’s decarbonization journey.'' says Bo Cerup-Simonsen, CEO of the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping. I am happy to share that my first peer-reviewed article has finally been published in the Brown Journal of Philosophy, Politics & Economics (JPPE). This is an article entitled "Cheap Transit Passes as Climate Policy: A Case Study of the 9-Euro-Ticket" that I wrote back in October 2022. In it, I examine the 9-Euro-Ticket's impact on transit ridership and the optimal pricing of a successor ticket based on revenue, ridership, and climate impacts. I also looked at potential mechanisms for recognizing the emissions benefits of greater transit ridership as a revenue stream. Unfortunately, due to delays within JPPE, this piece is just now getting published, after Deutsche Bahn and Verband Deutscher Verkehrsunternehmen (VDV) have already offered the replacement Deutschland Ticket at 49 Euros a month. Nonetheless, I hope that my article adds some consideration to the challenge of how to incentivize mode shift and changes in behavior to address climate change, rather than just hoping for future technology to save us. My article is on pages 97-119. (The full issue can also be found at - Volume V, Issue II: https://lnkd.in/eWy-vgug) #transit #climate #rail

"The Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) is a major tipping element in the climate system and a future collapse would have severe impacts on the climate in the North Atlantic region. In recent years weakening in circulation has been reported, but assessments by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), based on the Climate Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP) model simulations suggest that a full collapse is unlikely within the 21st century. Tipping to an undesired state in the climate is, however, a growing concern with increasing greenhouse gas concentrations. Predictions based on observations rely on detecting early-warning signals, primarily an increase in variance (loss of resilience) and increased autocorrelation (critical slowing down), which have recently been reported for the AMOC. Here we provide statistical significance and data-driven estimators for the time of tipping. We estimate a collapse of the AMOC to occur around mid-century under the current scenario of future emissions." Professor of Transport Geography | Director Institute for Climate Change and Sustainable Development, Univ. of Malta | Chair of NECTAR
Looking forward to the discussion and exchanges this week in Washington DC at the 7th EU-US Symposium 🇪🇺🇺🇸on Transport Research entitled Global Pathways to Net Zero: Behavioural, Social and Technological Research and Innovation Strategies for #Transport #Decarbonisation. I will be the rapporteur for the discussion surrounding the topic on #Sustainable and #Resilient Land use and Transportation System Design. It is critical to extend the discussion on decarbonisation to all the elements that affect or interact with transport systems, including the (still) much needed modal shift to public transport and more active travel in cities, accessible and safe urban environments that contribute towards resilient and more #livable places, integrated land use and transport #planning to reduce the need to travel, and others. The event brings together some 50 experts and is hosted by the European Commission and the U.S. Department of Transportation. Organized by the Transportation Research Board in cooperation with Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute (VTI), ECTRI, VDI/VDE Innovation Technik GmbH as part of the EU funded #Sympeus project!
