Does it make sense to fly all the way to a conference in California to learn about and discuss sustainable transportation research? It certainly feels odd. However, all the virtual conferences during covid had really very limited value, no matter how hard the organizers tried - I believe researchers will have to continue meeting in person. It's not just about the posters and presentations but also about all the small chats in between, which get completely lost if you don't meet in person. Thus, I am happy that I attended the IEEE Forum for Innovative Sustainable Transportation Systems from the IEEE ITS Society last week. In general, it remains hard to say if we can make transportation more sustainable. No matter how hard humanity tried (and technologies did get much more efficient), global emissions in the transport sector have continuously risen since 1970: https://lnkd.in/etDHXZEr In our work, we looked at the potential benefits of sharing autonomous vehicles. As I worked on carpools in our start-up SAYM before I started my PhD, this topic is really close to my heart. Our research showed that it is challenging to gain meaningful sustainability gains from sharing alone - electrification seems much more important. Also, Lyft discontinued shared rides recently, and Uber gives you only 20% off - companies just earn more if you don't share a ride. Will we ever see Waymo, Cruise, Zoox etc (who will be under much higher financial pressure) to offer shared rides in meaningful numbers? I'm pessimistic, but we'll see. All in all, I learned a lot and had good discussions but came home with much less hope than ever before. I really like my field, as getting from A to B is such a central part of life, but I'm more skeptical than ever that autonomy will change the world for the better. However, I saw lots of interesting works that dealt with improving loading infrastructure for electric vehicles or more intelligent routing algorithms for logistics companies. So I remain hopeful that our field will continue getting better based on the research many of us do. But will total emissions go down? I would like to see it happen, but I remain skeptical. In a conversation on the future of transportation, we asked participants a question: "What could be the best solution for our traffic woes?" The options were from moonshots to crazy ideas. Here is how people responded. Interesting to note that there are more believers in replacing the roads with conveyer belts than having flying cars! Takes us back to the idea of going for basic and mundane, yet effective solutions than aiming for moonshots, which may or may not happen in a lifetime.

Enjoyed attending Drive Sweden Forum in Gothenburg, focusing on the future of sustainable transportation systems. Great to reconnect with familiar faces and meet new stakeholders in the field! 🤝 My biggest takeaways: - 🏙️ Municipalities are actively investing in piloting autonomous vehicles. Public sector is willing to help with the approval process and build an ecosystem for AV testing, indicating growing local government interest in shaping future mobility. - 🅿️ Staggering ratio of 25 million parking spots to just 5 million vehicles in Sweden (for context, some cities in the US have even 7:1 ratio!). This land could be better utilized for healthier living spaces or more profitable real estate developments. - 🚘 Enduring presence of ICE vehicles, which could have a lifecycle of 30 years when accounting for resale to emerging markets. - 🌍 We don't need another network; what's needed is a common vision and collaborative efforts from existing stakeholders. Need to take into account various demographics and geographical settings. The road to sustainability is complex but achievable with coordinated action. A standout moment was representing our workgroup, TF2.1, focused on "New Mobility and its Impact on Road Infrastructure and Transport." The collective expertise, innovative thinking, and forward-looking approach of this group are captured in this photo I’m sharing. Our spotlight afternoon session delved into the profound implications of emerging mobility trends. We examined the challenges and opportunities presented by electric and autonomous vehicles, shared mobility, and intelligent transport systems, grounded in our mandate from the PIARC (World Road Association). The insights exchanged during our presentation, especially the interactive dialogue that ensued, were testament to the diverse, global effort to navigate these uncharted territories of new mobility. It's exhilarating to ponder how our discussions might one day translate into tangible strategies shaping the roads and transport systems of our future.
