The Financial Services Authority (OJK) reveals that the majority of players in financial technology innovation, commonly known as financial technology (fintech), are in the productive age range of 25 to 35 years, reaching 70.8%. The age group of 36-50 years follows at 23.1%, while 6.1% are aged 18-25 years. OJK data indicates that fintech users mostly come from the middle-income group, indicating that fintech serves as an alternative for those who do not use or have limited access to banking services. In terms of income, 41.5% of fintech users have earnings between 5-10 million, while 20% fall in the range of 10 million-25 million, and 18.5% have incomes of 25-50 million. Based on location, approximately 88% of fintech users are in Jakarta, followed by Bandung (29.3%), Surabaya (28%), and several other cities. Interestingly, from January to October 2023, OJK, along with the Task Force for the Eradication of Illegal Financial Activities, has blocked 1,466 illegal online lending platforms in response to 8,047 complaints, the majority of which are related to illegal online lending. Friderica Widyasari Dewi, Executive Head of Supervision of Financial Business Player Behavior, Education, and Consumer Protection, warns that many people fall into illegal online lending due to lifestyle and phenomena such as the hedonic treadmill, fear of missing out (FOMO), and you only live once (YOLO), especially among the millennial and Gen Z generations.
