Does your military transition or career pivot ever feel like you are going the wrong way? It did for me a few times. ❌️ #dodskillbridge opportunity denied. A bunch of interviews at various levels and was ghosted 👻 Not understanding how to best translate my military skills and experience into applicable civilian terms. How did it change? When I finally decided to ask people about resources and support. There are so many that were available and beneficial. I found a mentor via American Corporate Partners (ACP). I started attending events hosted by 50strong and VETS2INDUSTRY. Now I would now add MilCruit events to that list as well. I networked with people in the industry I wanted to learn more about. I utilized #linkedin to learn from people like Lori Norris, Delaina Morse, and Joel Martycz. I started to help others understand about what I had learned. Know there is a lot of support available and you are not alone. What resources, organizations, and support recommendations do you have or did you use? #networking #military #veteran

My advocacy for the military community extends far beyond finding them meaningful careers. I have always had a personal mission of helping civilian organizations UNDERSTAND a veteran. They are multi-layered assets. There are 2 steps to making a successful post-service career match: 1. Prepare the veteran for a civilian company. 2. Prepare the civilian company for a veteran. The “ah-hah” moment is wonderful to witness when I explain the parallels between what their company does versus what that veteran candidate did while serving. How veterans have the skills, hands, motivation, and drive to get the work done, but just needs training on the specific tool/program/task in your organization. If you have a passion and goal of hiring veterans, I encourage you to take the time to understand them first…true diamonds will be missed if you don’t. 🌟Hire for character…train for skill🌟 #veteranemployment #veteran

Employers: If you’re looking for examples of successful career pathways for military community talent, start in-house. You may have members of the military community on your team without even realizing it. Those team members are key in helping you determine the most successful pathways for military community talent. It can be as simple as organizing a conversation with a resident veteran to ask them, “What makes you great at your job, and how has your military experience contributed to your success here?” Tap internal resources to find successful pathways that have already been executed.
