In March 2024, Germany shifted its stance on carbon capture and storage (CCS), embracing it as a crucial climate mitigation option. The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action announced key points for inclusion in the upcoming Carbon Management Strategy, highlighting CCS's role in reaching carbon neutrality. Germany, as the EU's largest economy and emitter, repositioned CCS as part of its climate agenda. The government introduced a bill to amend the Carbon Dioxide Storage Act, paving the way for CCS progress. The focus is on developing CCS infrastructure and implementing support mechanisms, crucial for achieving climate neutrality by 2045.

Significant transparency gap in countries' 2030 plans -- NEW report out on Italy, Hungary, Netherlands, Spain and Sweden. Report finds: "A clear course for implementation must therefore be laid out in the plans today, or the risk of missing the 2030 targets – and ultimately, the timely and cost-effective delivery of climate neutrality – is very high." https://lnkd.in/eqFmnBEQ Relevant for climate litigators and policy advocates. More analysis below 👇
The European Climate Neutrality Observatory (ECNO) has recently released a report on the transparency and internal consistency of EU Member States' National Energy and Climate Plans (NECPs). ECNO has assessed the NECPs from Italy, Hungary, the Netherlands, Spain and Sweden. It found that "The analysed plans all fall short on policy detail and transparency". In particular - the difference between (i) the emissions reductions achievable through these countries' disclosed plans / policy measures and (ii) their 2030 emissions reduction targets is considerable - between 14% and 117%. As ECNO have identified, "This transparency gap risks leading to what some actors refer to as an implementation gap." Closing this implementation gap is critical to ensuring that national governments, and the EU as a whole, meet their 2030 targets. The full report is available here 👇 https://lnkd.in/ekyrUi7D

In occasion of the 6th Ibero-American Congress of Smart Cities (ICSC) 2023, NEUTRALPATH had the opportunity to present a paper entitled “Definition of an evaluation framework to assess the performance and impacts of Positive and Clean Energy Districts (PCEDs) in cities”. The paper introduces a significant evaluation framework designed to measure the effect of actions and analyse the cities' emissions in the pursuit of climate neutrality. Globally, governments at both national and subnational levels are establishing objectives and crafting policies to expedite the shift toward #sustainable #energysystems, aiming to enhance #energysecurity and achieve #climateneutrality. However, the distribution of costs and benefits associated with these transitions is not uniform across citizens, communities, and livelihoods. Join ICLEI Europe for this insightful discussion!
🌍 Around the world, national and subnational governments are setting targets and developing policies to accelerate the transition to #sustainable energy systems to achieve energy security and climate neutrality. But the costs and benefits of such transitions are not equally distributed across citizens, communities and livelihoods. Join us today at a side event at the Spanish Pavilion to explore a “Just and Sustainable energy transition for people and the planet: how mayors are taking action to leave no one behind towards the Paris Agreement targets”. 🕘 2 Dec 16:30 GMT 4 at the Spanish Pavilion Learn more 👉 https://buff.ly/3N5ngep

Our Senior Policy Manager Mark Preston Aragonès participated in Carbon Gap's Transatlantic Dialogue on carbon removal policy in the EU and US. 📢 Alongside Mark, Rory Jacobson from U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Eve Tamme from Climate Principles, Giana Amador from Carbon Removal Alliance and Christian Holzleitner from European Commission DG CLIMA, all highlighted the evolving landscape of CDR within the EU and US. Emphasising the urgency, Mark highlighted the need to redirect our focus towards the individual EU Member States. The key objective is to ensure clarity regarding their anticipated residual emissions, as well as to understand their long-term plans for emission reductions and carbon removals. These efforts, need to be synchronised, in order to collectively reach climate neutrality by 2050. 🌿 Check out the recording from the dialogue: https://lnkd.in/dXnaQBEA Read our joint statement calling for separate targets for emission reductions, enhancing the land sink, and increasing industrial carbon removals here 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gnnwiugE #CDR #EUCarbonRemovals #netzero

For those who wonder if the EU is on track to meet its climate neutrality: the European Carbon Neutrality Observatory (ECNO) does a yearly assessment using an indicator based framework that tracks progress across traditional economic sectors (electricity, industry, etc.) as well as the cross-cutting areas that have an impact on the emitting sectors, like finance, governance, and lifestyles. https://lnkd.in/eS8CrnJU

Head of the European Bureau for Research on Industrial Transformation and Emissions (EU-BRITE) at European Commission
Exactly two years after the Commission proposed the revamp of EU rules on industrial emissions, the European co-legislators signed yesterday the final text 🙌 In a few days, the revised Industrial Emissions Directive (IED 2.0) will be published in the Official Journal of the EU. This will mark the start of a new era to provide further support to businesses to tackle pollution, become more circular and reach climate neutrality, whereas keeping competitive. A key element is the establishment of the EU Innovation Centre on Industrial Transformation and Emissions (INCITE) to boost innovation and support industrial transformation, which the JRC will launch on 21 June 2024! https://lnkd.in/drrGtHhT
