The 2024 Green Hydrogen Strategy by (International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) ) outlines the need for effective stakeholder engagement, setting clear objectives, and balancing local use with export potential. While also realistically recommending a phased implementations, starting with smaller projects and scaling up - aligning with the current technical and regulatory challenges in the market. Had the honour to attend ICIS’ round table on ‘Building a European Hydrogen Market’ yesterday. Main takeaway: over-regulation could possibly stifle investment, and price Europe out of the global market. Low-carbon hydrogen and temporal matching were discussed in this space: I feel electrolysers will have to move once renewable electricity as a whole will be adminstrated more accurately and transparently. For all the news about US #hydrogen hubs, remarkably little concrete information has been disclosed. My colleague Payal Kaur published a deep dive yesterday and here are some of her findings. 💡It's still unknown how much hydrogen each of the seven winning #hydrogenhubs will produce. 💡It's also unclear how this hydrogen will be made. Several winning hubs appear to have amended their plans since being selected on Oct 13, adding further uncertainty. 💡Data from the BNEF Hydrogen Database suggests more of the hubs' hydrogen may end up being blue rather than green, even if total funding for green H2 is said to be larger. We know that negotiations are about to begin and much should become clearer when they conclude. Given public money is on the table, more transparency on the process would be welcome. Green hydrogen reduces emissions by using renewable energy sources like wind, solar, and hydroelectric power to produce hydrogen through electrolysis. This process splits water into hydrogen and oxygen without emitting carbon dioxide, making it an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional hydrogen production methods that rely on fossil fuels and generate significant greenhouse gas emissions.
