💧The paradigm of “green or blue” #hydrogen has limited our imagination – and our options. In our recent #H2EQuarterly edition, we take a look at the #LowCarbon Hydrogen Delegated Act which will set CO2 emission limits for #hydrogenproduction, ensuring that only truly ‘low-carbon’ methods receive funding and permitting support. 💡 We are in a position to produce hydrogen and its derivatives for all the hard-to-abate sectors, and to support #electrification in selected sectors in the interest of #systemresilience. Waste-to-hydrogen technologies can also contribute at scale to the #decarbonisation mission and to the upscale of the #hydrogenmarket. 🌿 Clear and robust definitions of low-carbon hydrogen will encourage various production pathways while maintaining the primary goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In this lead story article: ➡ Sundus Cordelia Ramli, CCO Power-to-X of Topsoe, emphasizes the importance of proactive #investment to avoid future #renewableenergy bottlenecks. ➡ Andy Gradel, Managing Director at BtX energy GmbH, stresses the huge potential of hydrogen production from #biowaste. We often focus on hydrogen as a new build fuel of the future. However it’s equally important to consider how we decarbonise the hydrogen production that exists today. Great article by my colleague Omar Bedani in the latest issue of Decarbonisation Technology magazine.
🍃 DISCOVER MORE ABOUT: Opportunities for decarbonising existing hydrogen production. Omar Bedani from Wood discovers that decarbonising existing SMR-based hydrogen production units is possible, and each solution has advantages and disadvantages related to the required modifications. #Blue #hydrogen is #produced through a process called #steam #methane #reforming, where #natural #gas is converted into #hydrogen and #carbon #dioxide (CO2) with carbon capture and #storage (CCS) to mitigate environmental impact. Unlike grey hydrogen, which emits CO2 directly, blue hydrogen captures and stores its carbon emissions underground. While considered a transitional solution, critics argue that it still relies on fossil fuels and may pose environmental risks. Proponents see it as a pragmatic step towards decarbonizing the hydrogen sector, providing a cleaner alternative to conventional methods while infrastructure for green hydrogen production is being developed. ✅ 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗯 𝗣𝗗𝗙 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀 >> https://lnkd.in/gQgrPw6X The Blue Hydrogen Market is gaining significant traction as a key component in the transition to a low-carbon energy future. Blue hydrogen, produced from natural gas with carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology, offers a pragmatic solution for reducing carbon emissions while leveraging existing natural gas infrastructure. #BlueHydrogen #HydrogenEconomy #CarbonCapture #SustainableEnergy #LowCarbonFuture #Decarbonization #EnergyTransition #CleanEnergy #CCSTechnology #GreenhouseGasReduction #RenewableEnergy #EnergyInnovation #ClimateAction #SustainableSolutions #HydrogenProduction 𝐕𝐢𝐞𝐰 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐮𝐥𝐥 𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞 -https://lnkd.in/gBFRCPmX

Hydrogen is just one of several strategies that can be used to reduce emissions in the industrial sector, offering a clean and sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. Gray hydrogen which is produced through the steam methane reforming (SMR) process using light hydrocarbons as a feedstock, is probably the most established and widely used method for hydrogen production, but it does emit carbon dioxide during production. Decarbonizing gray hydrogen is a significant challenge, and it can be costly due to the investments required for carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology or the transition to green hydrogen. However, advancements in technology, economies of scale, and supportive policies are expected to contribute to the decrease in decarbonization costs over time. Developing a comprehensive roadmap that incorporates a combination of strategies will be necessary to transition to a low-carbon hydrogen economy. This roadmap must consider factors such as cost, availability of renewable resources, and infrastructure requirements. The journey towards decarbonizing hydrogen is ongoing, with ongoing efforts to develop cost-effective and sustainable methods for hydrogen production and utilization. Yet more nonsense pedalled by the oil and gas industry and the consultants who serve them. Hydrogen production using green wind power is the only way to go - if the smart people and investment were all pointing in the right direction I wonder how much faster we make a true energy transition happen??

Europe's Hydrogen Future: A Deep Dive into Clean Production Pathways ⚡️ The future of clean energy in Europe is bright, with a range of ready-to-deploy hydrogen production technologies poised to drive decarbonization. 🌎 Hydrogen Europe's latest report, "Clean Hydrogen Production Pathways 2024", dives deep into these crucial pathways, revealing key insights and numbers. 📊 Key Takeaways: - Regulatory Complexity: Current regulations create artificial barriers, hindering some technologies. Electrolysis: Urgent action needed to relax rules on additionality and temporal correlation for RFNBOs and to facilitate low-carbon electricity use.💡 Low-Carbon Fuels: Adopting the Delegated Act is critical to establish clear emissions standards and accurate accounting for low-carbon hydrogen. ✅ Pre-combustion Capture: The Industrial Carbon Management Strategy and Net Zero Industrial Act should recognize methods like solid carbon from methane splitting and biochar from biowaste, allowing CO2 emission deductions. 🌱 - Waste Management Potential: Hydrogen produced from non-biological and non-recyclable solid waste offers a crucial solution to waste management challenges. ♻️ - LCOH Range: The levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH) varies significantly between €1.7 and €10.2/kg across different production methods. While water electrolysis is currently the most expensive, it holds the most potential for cost reduction. 📉 - Emerging Technologies: New methods offer promise for low-cost, sustainable hydrogen. Dedicated funding under Horizon Europe is crucial to support further research. 🔬 "Reaching net-zero by 2050 requires a diverse portfolio of technologies, and hydrogen plays a crucial role," says Daniel Fraile, Chief Policy & Market Officer at Hydrogen Europe. "Our report showcases 5 readily available pathways for clean hydrogen production, enabling competitive emissions reductions. The European Commission must prioritize removing regulatory barriers and implementing a low-carbon fuels framework to unlock investment in these essential technologies."
