The Hidden Challenges of Design Engineering: What They Don't Tell You. For some reason, designers who code have historically been put on some kind of imaginative pedestal. But when working in a team environment, this hybrid skillset brings challenges of its own. Let me share with you some hidden realities of so called "unicorns". 1. Master of none You are a generalist in a sea of specialists. Talk about imposter syndrome. Each day you will work with designers and developers who are more experienced than you and you will have to find a way to influence them. 2. Team of one You'll often find yourself responsible for tracks of work that are solely your own. When you're blocked, you'll need to find the right partners to get your projects across the finish line. Most DEs I know are self-starters. 3. Role ambiguity Chances are, there's going to be stakeholders you work with, including leadership, that don't fully understand your role and what value you bring to the company. 4. Lack of career progression Design engineering is still a niche role. The chances of joining a team with a career track for you are slim to none. #DesignEngineering is the most rewarding position I have ever worked in but every role has it's challenges and it's important to bring awareness to some of the lesser unknown truths. Picture this: I started out just like you, passionate about engineering and design, but eager for more. I found myself constantly seeking new challenges and opportunities to grow in my career. As I gained experience, I realized that being a Design Lead Engineer wasn't just about technical skills – it was about leading projects and teams to success. I had to learn how to coordinate with different departments, manage schedules, and ensure that our designs met all requirements. There were moments of frustration, of course. Projects don't always go as planned, and deadlines can be tight, however with determination and a supportive team by my side, we always found a way to overcome any obstacles and deliver top-notch results. One of the most rewarding aspects of being a Design Lead Engineer is seeing the impact of your work. Whether it's designing a new product that improves people's lives or solving a complex engineering challenge, knowing that my efforts make a difference is incredibly fulfilling. So, if you're like me – driven, ambitious, and ready to take on new challenges – I encourage you to explore opportunities in engineering leadership. It's not always easy, but it's definitely worth it. Who knows? You might just discover a whole new world of possibilities waiting for you. https://lnkd.in/eYmzWURk
