With fewer diverse voices represented in AI development, the resulting products could be less accurate or more harmful to users. ‼️By mid-2023, DEI-related job postings had declined 44% from the same time a year prior, according to data provided by job site Indeed. Big Promises, Big Cuts: The Urgent Need for Effective DEI in Tech Jennifer Elias recently spotlighted the failure of tech giants like Google and Meta to uphold their DEI commitments. In 2023, we've seen up to 90% cuts in DEI staffing and budgets, a critical issue as AI evolves, requiring diverse perspectives to mitigate biases. But the recent discourse around DEI initiatives, supported by the insights of Mahzarin Banaji and Frank Dobbin, reveals that traditional DEI training may often fall short or even backfire. The challenge is clear: implicit bias persists and conventional accusatory approaches in DEI training often result in individuals feeling defensive or dismissive. Instead, cultural inclusion strategies emphasizing skills in listening, observation, and intervention can create a more understanding and proactive environment, helping manage biases effectively. The real-life impact? A 2023 study in progress by Elizabeth Linos, Sanaz Mobasseri, and Nina Roussille underscores the critical challenges Black employees, particularly Black women, encounter in tech environments. Black employees are significantly more likely to leave and less likely to be promoted than their White counterparts, with team racial composition playing a key role. Specifically, Black women experience up to a 51% greater turnover gap compared to White women. In such settings, the feelings of alienation, undervaluation, and isolation are a response to the subtle yet persistent experiences of microaggressions and bias. Notably, just a one standard deviation increase in White coworkers correlates with a 10.6 percentage point rise in turnover for Black women. This isn't just about broken promises; it's about evolving our approach. Effective DEI is about dismantling the very systems that uphold bias and inequality, not just addressing individual prejudices. It's about democratizing the workplace and ensuring everyone, especially those at intersections of multiple identities, can thrive. So, what can we do? Firstly, transform our DEI strategies from shame and fear tactics to empowerment and education. Secondly, make DEI a continuous, proactive effort, not a reactive measure. Invest in understanding and addressing the unique experiences of all groups. And lastly, shift our focus from just legal compliance to actual cultural change that fosters listening, empathy, and intervention. The path to effective DEI is indeed complex and challenging, but it's also full of potential. By embracing a more informed, inclusive, and interventionist approach, we can make real strides towards a diverse, equitable, and inclusive future in tech. Let's not wait for another wake-up call. It's time to act, innovate, and genuinely commit to turning those big promises into real progress.

It's disappointing to see major tech companies like Google and Meta – companies which have so often led the way in taking progressive approaches to business – making cuts to their DEI programs. As CNBC reports, the cuts come as the tech industry doubles down on AI. But with fewer diverse voices represented in AI, the resulting products could fail to reflect the whole human community. Companies are facing financial pressures, DEI has never been more important in tech. And those companies that row back on their promises could have a tough time attracting future talent in future. 🫤 I am disappointed in organizations. Deeply disappointed. We are letting a decline in sales take us away from things that really matter for humanity, and that is diversity, equity, and inclusion. These things should be a basic right at work and in life. Companies in big tech like Meta and Google are making short term business decisions to reduce or eliminate diversity departments within their organizations to appear more profitable for their shareholders and WallStreet. This is not what we should be doing right now. 🔑 We should be leaning into the investment of our people and policies and processes that make employees feel seen, welcomed, and supported especially with a staggering 62% of employees reported feeling the weight of burnout.
