I receive a lot of messages from people who want to work at Mindfield in a talent acquisition role. They want to know what we are looking for in a recruiter and what I would suggest for them to work on in terms of their skills. The answer to that question has certainly changed over time. When we think about today's talent acquisition specialist, they've got to have a great handle on technology. They're up to speed on on the key tools and maybe even testing new ideas and new concepts. Another thing that I've really started to value is when recruiters build their own personal brand. You've got incredible social media platforms like LinkedIn, where you can start sharing content and engaging. Being consistent with how you build your brand on these platforms can have a huge impact on your career and your effectiveness as a recruiter. We're also looking for individuals that really love the idea of helping people. That's what recruiters do — we get to impact people's lives substantially, and it's not something that we take lightly. Finally, a little bit of grit doesn’t hurt. Many of our greatest hires have come from people following up or reconnecting with us when they were ready to make a move to Mindfield. Those are things I look for, so take this advice on board if you want. And watch this space, because I expect that more jobs will be opening up this Spring, both with us and across the talent acquisition industry.

If you are working with an IT Recruiter and the job spec doesn't make sense or you need more information, ask the recruiter to get that on your behalf. Myself and Brendan McCrory went out to a key client yesterday with exactly that in mind. We needed more detail on the client, more detail on the types of engagements that the client was about to undertake, and some sound bytes on recent wins and the clients aspirations for the next period. There is no substitute for this Recruiter trait. If you represent the role in its entirety after a meeting like this two good things will happen. Those candidates that discounted the role will now consider it. And, those that would have wasted their and the clients time by trying to find out information adjacent to the spec, start looking at other more suitable roles. Saving all three parties time and effort. The client , the recruiter and the candidate all have as much information as each other in this scenario. If you are in Talent Acquisition/Recruiter and have had to deal with searching for a job or being laid off, remember that feeling and be the Talent Acquisition/Recruiter professional you needed on your search. Be direct, be authentic, be empathetic and most of all communicate even when there is nothing new to say. I remember when I was searching for the candidates and I simply call them to tell there is no update also taking care of the follow-ups every weekend to notify for their application status. In that moment it didn't matter if he got the job or not. All that mattered that the candidate was seen and treated with respect and value. It changes mindset and confidence that someone will help to land a new role. Additionally, build a network of good people who can pick up your call for the next time in a ring!! Database is all about how you make it. It is not just an excel file or sheet to put the details. Be the recruiter you want to be recruited by.
