Unsurprisingly, Cal Newport’s principles for Slow Productivity in knowledge work resonate here. Big time. 1. Do fewer things. 2. Work at a natural pace. 3. OBSESS OVER QUALITY. The challenge for me has always been integrating 1 and 2 with my belief in the supremacy of #3. The crux might be finally figuring out how to effectively deploy an 80/20 framework inside of pillar 3. Certainly it is applicable to them all.

"Writing is the process by which we realize we don't understand what we're talking about. And it's only when you sit down and put pen to paper or even type out an idea that you have, a decision you're making, an idea you're wrestling with, that you sort of see where you don't understand it. And the process of writing is not only refining that idea and helping you reflect on it, but you actually generate new ideas in the process of writing." — Shane Parrish Listen to my interview with entrepreneur and Farnam Street creator Shane Parrish: https://lnkd.in/eeTK5686 Listen on Apple Podcasts: https://lnkd.in/e2rUJ-Fj Listen on Spotify: https://lnkd.in/eh59zBaf Watch on YouTube: https://lnkd.in/eRHKF86i

"And people think this slows you down, this is the biggest thing that I hear when I talk to people about this is they’re like, “Well, that’ll just slow us down and prevent us from taking action.” "Actually, the exact opposite is true because it increases — it’s sort of like you’re thinking in terms of speed, but speed doesn’t have a direction. It doesn’t matter how fast you’re going. If you’re running in circles..." Some of the gut-punching messages from this podcast. So much to chew on. Here are a few more: "Are we solving the right problem?" "Everybody looks like an idiot when they’re in a bad position, and everybody looks like a genius when they’re in a good position." Link below... What are you listening to? https://lnkd.in/gkBix9fj Thanks, Tim Ferriss, for another amazing episode, and Shane Parrish, your insights will haunt me for some time (in a good way.)

Another great episode of Tim Ferriss Show with Cal Newport 💪 Tim Ferriss Cal Newport: Well, the pull system, you say, okay, here’s how many things I work on at a time, so I only pull something new in when I’m done with something, which is different than the default of anyone can push work onto your plate at any time, and it’s up to you to just manage this. You have an unlimited load. A pull system says, “No, this is what I’m working on now. I can’t do something else until I’m done with this.” We can have a holding tank, and this is where it is. Here’s how I estimate when I’m going to get to it. There’s this many things ahead of it.” Cal Newport: One of my core ideas is the problem about putting a lot of things on your plate, even if they don’t have colliding deadlines or it’s up to you when you finish them, is once something is on your plate and you’ve agreed to do it, it generates overhead. People are going to check in on it. There’s going to be calls you have to jump on to talk about it. It has some cognitive space. What’s been happening a lot in modern knowledge work is that people have put so much stuff on their plate that the overhead of just managing all of this stuff — not doing the work, just the administrative overhead of calls and emails and meetings — takes up most of their schedule. https://lnkd.in/drq9P5yi
