  • How Can Public Housing Authorities (PHA) Protect Public Housing Residents from Extreme Heat?

Create cooling spaces in common areas for residents: PHAs can use HUD funds to create cooling spaces in common areas for residents. They can use HUD funds to purchase air conditioning and cooling equipment, to retrofit spaces, or for activities like weatherizing a building.

Grant relief to households to cover utility expenses for cooling their homes: HUD’s new notice clarifies that PHAs can increase families’ utility allowances, when requested, for the use of air conditioning during periods of severe or extreme heat. PHAs can start providing this relief immediately to all families who live in public housing.
