🎠 “It’s not called the wheel, it’s called the Carousel.” 🎠 My favourite scene in Mad Men - it perfectly captures the power of great marketing. Don Draper, Creative Director at a New York ad agency, is pitching to Kodak. Kodak is launching a slide projector - “the wheel”, and they want a good marketing campaign centred on the word wheel. Instead, Don pitches a different brand concept - The Carousel. Why is it so good? Don explains... “It takes us to a place where we ache to go again”. “It lets us travel the way, a child travels. Round and round, and back home again, to a place where we know we are loved.” Don knows the audience. He understands the product. And he delivers something that taps directly into the nostalgia people feel when they flick through a slideshow of old photos. His pitch tells a story. A brand concept that goes beyond features and benefits. Something that makes the audience feel. They immediately understand what the product does, and they connect with it emotionally. My advertising lecturer would be happy to learn that in 2024, if I was requested to lead a team that's advertising a SUIT..this is how I'd do it.
