Without a walk back or some major clarifications/revisions. Unity's pricing model could lead to many publishers and studios already using the engine to switch to their competitors.
Among the people I fear this is going to hit hard are the countless talented Unity focused developers, some with many many years of experience solely within that engine. Years/decades of hard work and expertise could be left by the wayside as developers switch their focus and attention to "safer" bets.
If we see a sharp decline in Unity focused studios, the knock-on effect on those developers, job seekers and graduates with a Unity focus will lead to a myriad of unhealthy things in Recruiting process which could include:
- Employers lowering salaries/benefits as if there are more people than jobs, the power is shifted in their favor. This will lead to skills based pay disparity.
- High volume applications, with less jobs, more job seekers will apply for the same role, putting stress on Internal recruiting teams and leading to an increase in things like limited/no feedback being given, poor reviewing, ghosting or jobs only being live/advertised for a mere few days.
- A lack of opportunity for many individuals. If Unity is all you know, the pool of roles available to you would drop significantly.
I wonder how many Unreal Engine installs there will be over the next few weeks from Unity focused developers looking to bolster their skills just in case.
And I'll bet that the lost profit to Unity of developers permanently switching engines will cost a lot more than 0.20 per install.
