Yes, Pipes. You. - Queen Elizabeth II (The Crown S6:E10) Geez, what a fantastic scene between Queen Elizabeth II and the Royal Bagpiper in The Crown (season 6) on Netflix. Queen Elizabeth II needs to select the music for her funeral. She's knows what she likes an goes straight to the Royal Bagpiper for help. Of course, the Royal Bagpiper is clearly nervous to have a direct audience with the the Queen and initially shares some "safe" musical choices that most people enjoy. The Queen quickly becomes more direct and makes it clear she wants his recommendation. The clearly astonished Royal Bagpiper than begins to grin a little and starts to relax. He shares "Sleep Dearie Sleep" and plays it for the Queen at her request in the middle of Buckingham Palace. Wow. So cool the Queen asked and even cooler the Royal Bagpiper was able to share. I know we all aren't royalty and being the royal bagpiper is probably pretty niche, but many of us do work in organizations with leaders and subject matter experts. A good reminder for us all, regardless of position in the organization. Leaders - There is a good chance your teams would be thrilled with a genuine engagement from you or a senior leader from the organization. They 100% know who you are even if you might not know all of them. Be like Queen Elizabeth II and have the courage to seek the honest opinions of subject matter experts from your team. Your team is full of knowledge and would be thrilled to not only have their opinions heard, but to also participate in turning them into action. Subject Matter Experts - When it is your time to shine, be like the Royal Bagpiper and share your honest feedback with your leadership. If they are asking then they are most likely interested in figuring out the best solution to a problem and only giving safe, generic responses is unlikely to help. You have valuable knowledge to share, so be ready to share when asked.

#storytelling A retiring goldsmith of a kingdom told the king that his sons would take over. The queen compelled the king to test both the sons on their capabilities, before investing. The goldsmith didn’t want to split his sons. Hence he made both to design identical jewelry pieces and sent it to the queen, often. Despite the same design and value, the queen always chose the box of the elder son. After 6 months she asked the king to appoint the elder son as her goldsmith. The curious king asked the queen why she chose the elder son despite there being no differences in their skills and craft. The queen said: “𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘰𝘹𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘭𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘴𝘰𝘯 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘩𝘢𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘫𝘦𝘸𝘦𝘭𝘳𝘺. Mirror, Mirror on the Wall In the fairy tale Snow White, the Evil Queen famously consults her magic mirror three times with the question, "Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all?” What if, instead of asking the same question repeatedly, the Queen had tried a different approach? Imagine if she had asked, "How can I enhance my own qualities? What steps can I take to find true contentment? And where can I find a coach to guide me in this journey?" 😂 If the Queen had taken time to reflect on her values, strengths, and areas for personal growth, she might have discovered a path to greater self-fulfilment. Rather than being consumed by jealousy and comparison, she could have focused on nurturing her own needs and aspirations. Self-reflection plays an important role in our lives and can lead to meaningful results. How would you use the mirror for self-reflection?

What's your circle of competence? How large or small is it? When did you last assess it? Circle of Competence is the expertise that gives us an edge. An honest assessment of 'Circle of Competence’ can make a big difference. The 45 years of reign by Queen Elizabeth 1 was one of triumph and success, inspiring loyalty and creativity in her citizens. However, when she ascended the throne in 1558, her country was in a precarious political situation. What was her key to success? Of course, she had excellent education and was a survivor. However, what probably made the key difference was her ability to identify and admit what she didn’t know. And her courage to take action to fill the gap. She built a Royal Advisory Board, not with YES men, but with a blend of the old and the new to develop stability and achieve continuity. She kept it small to ensure real discussions with a variety of opinions challenged and debated. In essence, Queen Elizabeth 1 was honest about her Circle of Competence. And brought in others for areas outside the circle. Circle of Competence is the small circle within a big circle. Many a times, it is much smaller than we would like to believe… What does it mean to us – as individuals, as professionals? Honest self-reflection followed by determined actions: - What is my Circle of competence? - How am I building and maintaining one? - How comfortable am I in recognizing and accepting what’s outside? - How do I operate when outside of circle of competence? #success #competence #reflection
