Our General Director & CEO Khori Dastoor was a featured speaker at this year's Aspen Ideas Festival in Colorado! 🌟 She joined an incredible lineup of distinguished artists and thought leaders, including journalist Jenn White, soprano Renée Fleming, and composer Missy Mazzoli. Together, they highlighted the dynamic evolution of opera and the pivotal roles women play as performers, composers, and opera house leaders. We couldn't be prouder to see Khori representing HGO and sharing her vision and passion for the arts with a global audience. ✨🤩✨ 🎥 Watch the full panel discussion on YouTube:

Another report points to the problem we all see: The lack of women in leadership positions prevents opera from reaching its fullest potential as an industry and an art form. For the past decade, OPERA America has made gender parity a priority issue for the field. Our Opera Grants for Women Composers have steadily increased the prevalence of new work by women on American stages. Our most recent addition, Opera Grants for Women Stage Directors and Conductors, advances the careers of women in the key artistic roles cited in this new report. On the administrative side, our Mentorship Program for Women Administrators has propelled the careers of numerous women who are climbing into the ranks of opera leadership. This and all our programs are catalyzed by the insight and energy of OPERA America’s Women’s Opera Network. At least this article acknowledges the progress that’s being made — even if so much more is needed. Read the full article below:

What part can opera play in a conversation on #climate & #health for Louisville’s business community? #Arts can open hearts and minds. Open hearts and minds can change the world. 1) The arts are not merely entertainment, designed to make us feel good. Rather, arts exist to cause us to FEEL. And to THINK. 2) When we Feel and Think in community with others, we can be drawn out of our focus on self. We then redirect our focus on others — our neighbors — and develop empathy and compassion. 3) With compassion, we are called to stewardship of others and the world we share and are responsible for. Not because we’re told to (or fined if we don’t), but because it is the right thing to do. What an honor to participate in this important discussion moderated by Dr. Wayne Tuckson. My fellow panelists — Dr. Aruni Batnagar, Sumedha Rao, Dr. Kim Allan Williams, Sr. — had so many wonderful things to share about their work.
Who knew that opera could play a part in Climate & Health? Our own CEO Barbara Lynne Jamison (she/her) shared how Kentucky Opera is active in this important societal role at Louisville Business First’s Executive Insights LIVE event on Climate & Health. Sponsored by the Christina Lee Brown Envirome institute.
