Blog - The Essential Classroom “The setting must promote not only children’s learning but also their pleasure in learning and the motivation to pursue it. Because the classroom is a teacher’s main work space, it should be welcoming and inspiring to the teacher, too.” (-Ann S. Epstein, The Intentional Teacher: Choosing the Best Strategies for Young Children’s Learning, Revised Edition) The preschool years are magical and that magic doesn’t just happen by chance but rather is intentional. Teachers well versed in early childhood education know that the learning environment is as important as the curriculum and teaching strategies employed. The where, what and how must work together to ensure that children are engaged and meeting their developmental milestones and potential. The classroom must inspire both the teacher and the students. One key element of a successful classroom is creating areas that will allow for and encourage cooperative play and activities. Much time is spent in preschool navigating taking turns, negotiation and using language to mediate conflicts. We teach our students to be kind, considerate and good human beings. A well laid out classroom environment is essential for this. Teachers model these behaviors throughout the day. Our early childhood classrooms at SLS are intentionally bright and house a variety of manipulatives, books, fine and gross motor activities, as well as math and literacy materials. As children explore both teacher directed and independent activities the goal is both exposure and ultimately to move toward mastery of the concepts presented. The environment provides an engaging venue to explore, play, learn and build confidence. Music, art and science are also represented. Developmental milestones are not really on a universal timeline, but rather on a continuum where some children will “get” the concept more quickly than others. Our teachers are experts at encouraging even the most reluctant learners, as well as students that need a quicker pace. Our classrooms are designed to allow differentiated instruction, so that children can move as quickly as they need to through our curriculum, with always just the right amount of challenge for each individual child. Play is an essential ingredient to preschool education. A balance between academic preparation and play along with adequate movement throughout the day fosters an atmosphere where children flourish. SLS teachers realize that a balanced approach and classroom environment go hand in hand. Teachers take pride in their classrooms and convey that daily to their students who in turn realize that their teacher's passion and excitement is a magical potion for the SLS learning experience. Early childhood teaching is a critical stage in a child's development, laying the foundation for their future academic success and social skills. Educators in this field play a pivotal role in nurturing young minds, fostering curiosity, and instilling a love for learning. Through carefully crafted activities and experiences, early childhood teachers stimulate cognitive growth, language development, and motor skills, ensuring that each child reaches their full potential. They create inclusive and supportive environments where children feel safe to explore, make mistakes, and learn from them, fostering resilience and self-confidence from an early age. Effective early childhood teaching goes beyond academic instruction, emphasizing the holistic development of each child. Teachers in this field recognize the importance of social-emotional learning, teaching empathy, cooperation, and problem-solving skills alongside traditional academic subjects. They work closely with families to create a seamless transition between home and school, recognizing that a strong partnership between educators and parents is essential for a child's overall well-being and development. By recognizing and nurturing the unique strengths and interests of each child, early childhood teachers lay the groundwork for a lifetime of learning and success.
