In today's construction industry, efficiency is key. Melissa Ott, our Managing Director, and Conrad Peto-Madew, Program Manager at Futury, observed that efficiency is currently in the construction sector. Startups are delivering solutions, but founders need more support to implement innovations. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰? Melissa and Conrad share insights from this year's MISSION Construction in a Handelsblatt Media Group interview: 1️⃣ Efficiency is Crucial: The entire construction industry is under significant pressure due to inflation, rising costs, and a changing interest and financing environment. Solutions that quickly enhance efficiency and reduce costs are in high demand, especially those from startups specializing in digitalization and digital tools. 2️⃣ New Innovation Dynamics: The current pressure is reshaping innovation in the industry. We are seeing more systemic and long-term partnerships between established companies to drive major projects and disruptive changes. Startups are increasingly being used as external innovation sources to inspire and develop pilot projects for challenges outside the core business of established companies. 3️⃣ Disruptive Innovations: Solutions for serial construction and renovation, new sustainable materials, and innovative energy systems continue to be important for the industry's decarbonization. Startups from academic and research backgrounds especially need support in the form of capital, market access, and long-term industrial partnerships. Want more insights from us? Innovator in Disruptive Impact: Origami-Based Circular Architectural Techniques | Championing Radical Collaboration in Construction | Creating Sustainable Habitats on Earth and Beyond | Climate Mayor, Rotterdam
🚀 Revolutionizing Impact with Category Design: A New Paradigm for Societal Innovation 🌍 Hello LinkedIn Community, I recently had the privilege of participating in the "Entrepreneur’s Playbook for Creating a Billion-Dollar Category" masterclass, thoughtfully provided by the EIT Climate-KIC community. Led by the insightful Peter Goldie and Deborah Kattler Kupetz, this session delved into the potent concept of Category Design, traditionally used by startups and tech innovators to carve out new market niches. Category Design teaches us the power of differentiation over simply being better. This approach is especially intriguing when considering how we can tackle pressing global issues like climate change and affordable housing shortage. Inspired by the insights from Peter and Debora, I advocate for a bold new objective: creating a "Million-Ton CO2 Reduction Category." This goal extends beyond achieving financial success to establishing a significant, lasting environmental impact. Think of shifting from chasing '#unicorn' status to becoming a "#Whale in the Ocean of #CircularEconomy" — embodying profound impact and leadership in sustainability. I’m eager to hear your perspectives: - How might Category Design reshape innovation in your sector? - Can reimagining our strategic goals lead to more impactful, sustainable outcomes? Please share your thoughts and join the discussion on leveraging groundbreaking strategies to truly make a difference. Thanks again to EIT Climate-KIC and our wonderful instructors for such an enlightening experience. Looking forward to your insights! Want to take a break from your business without breaking your business? Make everyone in your company a Boss, so you can disappear.
Tucked away down a side street, close to Canterbury West station is this early twentieth century reminder that we used to do things differently. What we've done before, we could do again. Even better this time. Innovation doesn't always have to be invented. Sometimes it just needs remembering. #circulareconomy #innovation #customerservice #memory #systemsthinking

💡We just read an op-ed titled "Why The Proptech Revolution Hasn't Materialized". It feels soo 2019. On our way from a week of insights and late nights at #MIPIM in Cannes, here's why: Real estate technology was showcased everywhere. Not just by hoodied founders, but by mayors, real estate execs, and the people planning what our cities will be like. Why? Because #proptech is now considered integral to solving the world's largest industry's most pressing environmental, social, and financial challenges: 🌼It helps this emission-intensive and slow-to-digitize industry cut its carbon footprint by consuming less energy and reporting compliance. 💹It bolsters the industry's pressured bottom line by adding efficiencies in the entire value chain - from planning and designing, to construction and marketing, to facility management and circularity. 💾 Data-driven proptech platforms and tools are the foundation of new business and policy models - including for affordable housing and future-proof office space. Are there a lot obstacles for proptech still? Oh, obviously. Is the space still too fragmented and app-intensive? Definitely. Developing top systems and making it easier for building owners to start picking all this delicious, low-hanging fruit is Proptech's next, big step. 🎬Below, the Clooney and Pitt of Proptech - on The Grand Auditorium Stage in Cannes. \ Fruitful conversation between German Federal Housing & Building Minister Klara Geywitz, PT1 Managing Partner Nikolas Samios & PT1 portfolio founder Emanuel Heisenberg At the ZIA PropTech booth at the #EXPOREAL2023, they discussed the impact #PropTech and #ConTech will have on the transformation of the #RealEstate sector in Germany, especially regarding scalable serial renovation, together with Aygül Özkan and Dr. Andreas Mattner from ZIA German Property Federation. Some of the key points included: \ Simplifying bureaucracy and speeding up the approval process, especially for renovations of existing buildings \ Addressing Germany's stance on ongoing EU discussions about MEPS (Minimum Energy Performance Standards) to balance regulation and promote sustainable urban #housing \ Leveraging the PropTech/ConTech ecosystem (e.g. with the over 3,500 European startups reviewed and 21 invested in by us) as an enabler, and exploring how government policies can support initiatives, including leading by example in federal-owned #RE projects \ Activating existing instruments to provide more early-stage VC for PropTech/ConTech ventures We're happy that this conversation isn't a one-time event, and we're excited about the genuine interest in further collaboration with Klara Geywitz. Let's continue working together to drive positive change in the real estate industry!

As of 01.10. I started a complementary role which is a perfect addition to UrbanDataLab. As Product Lead in ESG and Sustainability at pom , I support the Data and Analytics team in the development of software and processes on building and real estate portfolio level. pom has made a name for itself in the field of real estate in practice and research for 25 years. Companies, organizations and authorities are competently accompanied in all areas of strategic decision making and digitalization - and pom is also a supporting pillar in the StartUp sector: The Digital Real Estate Summit is the summit of the Swiss real estate industry and Peter Staub is an authority in the Swiss proptech scene. My role at pom in addition to UrbanDataLab (UDL) enables new perspectives and offers the opportunity to think about the topic of sustainability in a cross-scale and data-driven way. As an ETH spinoff, UDL already offers unique infrastructure and expertise in building data-driven site assessments and regional analytics. However, my focus at pom is on developing products for assessing and implementing sustainable buildings and portfolios. These roles intersect at the intersection of sustainability, technology, and data-driven decision making, (re)covering all scales of spatial development. By combining these fields, I am following my inner passion as a trained architect and urban planner to contribute to a more sustainable, efficient, and intelligent urban future. Moreover it highlights the transformative power of data and technology in shaping our cities. Join us on this exciting journey to a greener, smarter future! Northern Michigan's Hidden Hustle: A Hotbed of Innovation While the natural beauty of northern Michigan frequently graces magazine covers and travel blogs, the region's thriving innovation scene often goes unnoticed. This media blindspot creates a misconception of the Upper Peninsula and Lower Michigan's northern reaches as solely reliant on tourism and traditional industries. In reality, a wave of entrepreneurs and forward-thinkers are tackling challenges and developing solutions in fields like sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, and advanced manufacturing. This lack of recognition hinders not only the ability to attract talent and investment to the region, but also fails to inspire the next generation of innovators. Showcasing northern Michigan's ingenuity would demonstrate the area's potential for economic diversification and highlight the resilience and creativity of its people. By promoting these success stories, the media can help bridge the gap between perception and reality, fostering a more complete image of this dynamic region.
