Recent research from the Eviction Lab show that rising rents and evictions contribute to premature deaths. Two major findings were: 1) High cost of housing increases the risk of dying earlier for renters. 2) Simply being threatened with an eviction – even when the case does not result in an eviction judgment – was associated with a 19% increase in mortality. The research suggests that policies such as rental vouchers and low-income housing development incentives may lead to improved public health.

What happens to elderly people's housing decisions as they age? A new study finds that while #ageing reduces the likelihood of moving, unexpected health shocks can lead to people downsizing, which frees up #wealth for other purposes. The research from Joan Costa-i-Font (he/him) and Cristina Vilaplana finds a route to #urbanpolicy goals, as there are potential benefits of getting older individuals to downsize, which frees larger houses they own or rent. Combined with fiscal incentives for individuals to downsize, providing more housing choices for seniors can help younger individuals access a home in large and crowded cities.

New data shows that residents in senior housing live longer and enjoy better health outcomes compared to their peers. However, the research also underscores the urgent need for more affordable housing and care options, as millions of older adults face housing burdens. Milken Institute's recent report suggests innovative solutions like repurposing distressed properties, sustainable capital models, and value-based care partnerships to address these challenges. At SPHERE, our focus extends beyond traditional healthcare infrastructure to the broader built environment. By investing in innovative senior living solutions, we aim to create healthier, more equitable communities for all.

H O U S I N G A M E R I C A ’ S O L D E R A D U L T S - https://lnkd.in/g45p5TyA || PDF: https://lnkd.in/gRTg3K7N The US population 65 and over soared by 34 percent in the last decade, from 43 million in 2012 to 58 million in 2022. In the coming decade, the fastest growth will occur among those over 80, when people are more likely to need accessible housing as well as services and supports at home. The US, however, is not ready to provide housing and care for this surging population. Increased government support in the form of additional assistance for rent, accessibility modifications, and services and supports for older households with lower incomes could help alleviate the dual burden of housing and care costs. Better coordination of health and housing programs could help increase the efficiency of both. Older homeowners with slightly higher incomes unable to afford both housing and services could benefit from help leveraging their housing equity, where it is sufficient to cover the costs of care. For older adults without such resources, governments and other organizations might make service delivery more efficient by taking advantage of neighborhoods and buildings with high concentrations of older residents, better coordinating services and benefits, and unbundling services in assisted living, among other promising approaches. The need for suitable, affordable housing and housing-based care is only growing, as is the urgency to act.
